Yes - sorry!

All this silly factory version numbering of bodies where people use "III" or "3" or "iii" after a name causes constant confusion and errors, so I have altered they way I now refer to this nonsense by clearly adding "Mk3" to the name. No confusion that way if people referenced it neatly and forgot about that stupid 2,000 year old Roman numbering system.

I haven't owned E-P5 or E-M10iii, but I had E-M1 and E-M10i, and the answer is it depends on what you're going to do with it. Everything I have read seems to point to the E-M10iii as a crippled or dumbed down camera compared to the E-m10ii, really aimed at beginners and cell phone converts. The E-P5 and EM1 are both great cameras that offer the user a ton of control. Other than 4K, not sure what you'd gain

Seriously? The new Mark III is a "dumbed down" vision of the Mark II? Considering the annotated improvements in the Mark III's focusing, menu re-alignment and other improvements mentioned by Olympus, I think your analysis is dumbed down. The E-P5 is a prior generation camera thats not even to specs to the current E-P7.

Well you would think that the em10 mkiii is far superior to the e-p5 with over 4 years of evolution but sadly theres very little in the new em10iii that demonstrates this.

there are advantages to each and the e-p5 still has some advantages over the em10iii and is over half the price of em10iii now, well mine was a few years ago..

as for the epl7, the e-p5 is better in most ways and the epl7 is an em10ii

My understanding is that the E-pl7 has the same guts as the E-M10 mark I?

yes i think thats right

So, maybe if the E-pl9 materialises, it could basically be an E-M10 ii or iii without a viewfinder?

with no built in evf and less manual controls.. and many think the em10ii is the sweet spot in value/performance

My bet is that it'll be an E-M10-3 without viewfinder, so same dumbed down menu and plastic build. It will also keep the E-PL tradition of having one control wheel.

Maybe Olympus will surprise us with something close to a GM5 in size.

You had to say it didn’t you? Just when my GM7 yearnings had receded a bit 😉

The GAS is strong with this one

I wouldn't worry - I don't think Olympus will put in the kind of R&D needed to shrink the Pen's shutter and IBIS system enough to bring it down to GM5 or GX850 levels. My E-PM2 is still much larger than my fiancee's GM5.

GX850 size would be good but I would want the build quality of GMs and a faster flash synch speed. Contrary to the views of many here, I would be happy with the 16MP sensor.

Of course, from Oly would want IBIS and with body size don’t hold out much hope!

However, how come the really tiny Panasonic superzoom compacts manage to pack IS?

My E-PM2 is still much larger than my fiancee's GM5.

My problem is why step down from one of the top-of-the-line cameras to the second drawer? I just don't like that logic.

The one concrete gain would be a built in viewfinder and perhaps that's what's driving your interest. But then why not pick up a E-M5.2: high quality body, weather sealed (durable), excellent viewfinder and full menu access.

How much more will it cost you? It's worth looking into.

Full disclaimer that I currently do not own any Oly gear, but I have shot extensively with the EP-5, EM-1 mk1, and EM-10mk2.

I've examined the EM-10mk3 at Robert's Camera and actually prefer the older mk2 to it. I would certainly not consider it a substitute for the still excellent EM-1 mk1. The only thing I think it materially offers is a slight evolution in AF behavior and image processing over the prior EM-10 generations.

In my opinion, keep your excellent EP5. Olympus has never truly replaced that camera, and I regret selling mine. If you feel you need a replacement for the EP5, you should be seriously considering the PEN-F, not the EPL7 or an OM-10mk3.

Now, about what lenses you should be wanting to own... (hah!)

Best to you!

A Pen flagship will always feel very different to the EM series. Money permitting I would alwayd live to have a Pen as my social camera but alas I need my backup body to be more commercial orientated.

The EM1O ii seems to be a hotspot on deals and the mkiii seems to have been rather cool in reception.

Unless you need the best possible CAF performance the EM1 and EM1.2 is not necessarily "better" than an EM10 mkii or iii. I value the ability to shoot BIF with a 400mm lens which would be rather futile with any Oly other than an EM1 but for everyday photos I think the EM10 ii is great and Pen F even nicer (bar the price). Then there is the EM5 if you don't need the CAF of the EM1 but do want the weatherproofing... good luck!

Good point on the EM5, the EM5mk2 is still going for what, $800 for a new body? And you get the first gen high-res mode and weather sealing at that.

OK... Thanks everyone. I'll stick with the E-P5. It's in great shape and works.

I'll keep my eyes open for a like new e-m1 or even a new unopened one on clearance later on. It really has been my favorite Olympus to date. I don't like the E-M5 Mark II style with the flip out screen. I like the tilting one instead.
