Help X-E3 or X100F - using eye glasses

Considering X-E3 with 27mm lens or X100F

I am trying to make an informed decision in selecting one of these cameras as a second body. I have read as much as I could find, watched tons of video.

1. Intended use for travel/hiking

2. No further lens for use with the X-E3. Currently have E2 which will be upgraded to
X-T2 or then current model in about a year or so

3. X100F a. leaf shutter, probably not an plus or minus for me.
b. small internal flash a plus

c. ND filter - very interesting

4 As a full time glasses wearer, concerned about, but not well informed about the impact, if any, of the shorter eye point of the X100f. The X-E3 being better (longer), but still shorter than my X-E2.

Also, diopter range of the X100F is less than the X-E3 and my X-E2

Eye Point Diopter Range
X-E2 23mm -4 to +2
X-E3 17.5mm -4 to +2
X100F 15mm -2 to +1

On the X-E2, I had no problem with viewing either with or without glasses using the diopter control, excepting for frequent light leaking around the eye cup. I have read somewhere that the X100F is a somewhat better.

Would be very appreciative for comments helpful with my understanding of these specification differences.

Thanks,

Roger

I have an X-E2 and X100F - no problem using either while wearing my glasses. I'm EVF almost all the time.

Silent leaf shutter is discrete and without the foibles of Electronic shutter. Use with flash to 1/1000 for probably the best of all Fuji fill flash results and it can be used in conjunction with the built-in ND filter to make things easier too.

Re: Help X-E3 or X100F - using eye glasses

Roger,

I can’t comment about the X-E3, but as an eyeglass wearer I don’t have any problem shooting my X-100F with my glasses. I use both the EVF and the OVF with a slight diopter adjustment.

The X-100F is excellent BTW.

1. Intended use for travel/hiking

Either camera should be able to do this, the X100F being smaller and more discreet

2. No further lens for use with the X-E3. Currently have E2 which will be upgraded to
X-T2 or then current model in about a year or so

The beauty of XE3; can use with any lens; the bane of the X100F sometimes

I've been using the X100F since May but may sell in favor of XE3 since I need a second backup body to XT2 and the XE3 fits the bill as both backup and street camera + prime

I could have gotten a XT1 and keep the X100F but I don't want to carry 3 bodies on a trip

3. X100F a. leaf shutter, probably not an plus or minus for me.
b. small internal flash a plus

c. ND filter - very interesting

All good but one needs to use them ; I have not touched these

4 As a full time glasses wearer, concerned about, but not well informed about the impact, if any, of the shorter eye point of the X100f. The X-E3 being better (longer), but still shorter than my X-E2.

Also, diopter range of the X100F is less than the X-E3 and my X-E2

Eye Point Diopter Range
X-E2 23mm -4 to +2
X-E3 17.5mm -4 to +2
X100F 15mm -2 to +1

Should be a non issue with either; I wear glasses too (-5.0 correction) and have no problems

XE3 AF is faster than X100F

X100F has better build

X100F has OVF for those who swear by them; I only use it 1% of the time, prefer EVF WISIWIG

The X100F is desirable , albeit not as versatile as the XE3

Best wishes,

Re: Help X-E3 or X100F - using eye glasses

Your response got me thinking.  Although I use glasses for everything, I almost always remove glasses for camera use.  I think I asked the question in the wrong way.  As I said, I am a glasses wearer.  Should I have asked if the camera diopter and eye point on X-E3 were a significant improvement on the X100F?  Is any of this relevant for camera use?  Why are the specs on these two camera for diopter range and eye point so different?  Do I need to be concerned.  Most have responded that they have no issues.  Probably I shouldn't be concerned.  But yet...

Thanks,

Roger

Totally agree. It is magic waiting for discover for lot of users. I thought it is useless before and dived in last week with my x100. Now I understand why there is a build in Nd filter for this camera and how to combine leaf shutter, Nd filter and flash to create something truly amazing.

Once understood, you will not consider x100 same as other e,t,pro series. It is just not the same thing.

I'm the same, hardly ever shoot with glasses. My right eye is not too bad for distance so I haven't used a camera where the built in diopter wasn't enough. Now looking on the LCD in back, that can be a struggle.

Thanks for your comments.  I'm perplexed why the diopter range on these two camera are so different.  Maybe is just doesn't matter.  Wish I understood.

Re: Help X-E3 or X100F - using eye glasses

Old thread, new (to me) problem.

I been been using the Fujis for a long time now:

x100 & S & T, X-E1 & 2, X-T10 and the X-T2.

My shooting eye (right) is in terrible shape, but I've always succeeded to adjust the diopter setting on the various models so I can shoot without glasses.

Yesterday my brand new, lovely X100F arrived, and I can no longer see clearly through the VF.

The diopter setting is too narrow. I sold the X100T 2 years ago, didn't have a problem with that. I still don't have a problem with X-T2 or X-T10.

Has something in the X100F model changed or am I just getting really old?

/Henrik

Re: Help X-E3 or X100F - using eye glasses

I am not qualified to explain the optics

Eye Point Diopter Range
X-E2 23mm -4 to +2
X-E3 17.5mm -4 to +2
X100F 15mm -2 to +1

But for me the X100F diopter was a perceived issue.  I did not keep the camera.  The X-E3 is working out quite well.  Also, although the rubber eye piece looks the same as my previously owned X-E2, I have not experienced the light leaks.

Sorry about your X100F, it's lovely.

I think it depends on your glasses. I wear them but have no problem with the eye point on my X-Pro2.

It must be really frustrating to have a viewfinder with such a limited diopter range. What on earth were Fuji thinking?

Re: Help X-E3 or X100F - using eye glasses

I own an E3 now and previously a 100F. I am a glasses wearer (trifocals or polarized sunglasses). The 100F viewfinder is slightly better in terms of usability. The difference is not huge and I find the E3 adequate and the 100F adequate plus (by a little bit) Because of less magnification and smaller size and eye-point with both the E3 and 100F you need to be careful to scan the periphery/far corners. But you learn to do this instinctively pretty quickly. This is especially true when compared with the truly outstanding and easy to use viewfinder on the T2 where no such scanning is required. I loved the 100F but traded it in for an E3 because of the added flexibility of interchangeable lenses and the fact that the 27mm pancake is only a tad bit wider than the 100F but still pocketable in a jacket with an E3. If I want total pocketability/stealth I use my RX100 (image quality can't match the Fuji's).

I found the optical viewfinder on the 100F invaluable in very low light situations though and the leaf shutter is very nice. I chose flexibility in lenses for a small amount of extra bulk and a tiny bit worse, but still adequate viewfinder.

I need about a -2.5 diopter for true in-focus viewing via the EVF/OVF. I'm a bit surprised by the narrow range of adjustment, but wonder if there is an after-market solution?

I was a commercial shooter for 30+ years in a former life, and I never used glasses when shooting before, but may have to in the future if the diopter cannot be augmented.

I will search on this myself, and if I find anything, I will post here.
