Should I get the 16-35 gm or 24-70 gm?

I currently have the a7r3 and a9. One camera will have the 85 prime on while the other will have a general usage lens. It will be mainly for event and landscape photography. I like the 16-35 for its wide angle to get more landscapes and possibly environmental portraits. The 24-70 deeps slightly into the wide angle and reaches the normal zoom range, but I have the 85 on my other body already.

Which lens would you suggest I get?

Depend on what you use more often. I have 16-35GM, 24-70GM, 85GM. The 16-35 is excellent for out doors and landscape, you can take portrait too however you will see distortion at 16mm since most wide lens are like that. The 24-70 is excellent for events and group pictures & portrait. I love the 85GM, taking picture in low light is nice, 2 extra stop compared to f2.8 does make a great difference.

If you are doing more on events then I suggest get the 24-70, at 24mm it also wide enough for landscape

That answers your question, or am I missing something?

Hard to say. I have both lenses and for event work I will tend to work with the 24-70 GM most of the time with the 85 on my other body but if I have a lot of large groups I may switch to the 16-35 GM along with either the FE55 or 85. If you're going to do a lot of landscape work then the 16-35Gm is a real must and personally I now shoot landscape with 2 bodies with the 16-35GM on one and the 70-300 G on the other

The only one that can answer this question is you. Or just get both lenses

You'll end up getting both - just a question of which one first.

Thanks everyone, I am going with 24-70mm as a starter.

Just curious, what makes you chose this over let's say the newer 24-105?

To which the answer is almost certainly f2.8.  ; )

That was something I was struggling to decide on as well. I love the extra reach. But the decision came down to the aperture.

Taking pictures at event such as wedding and portrait in lowlight and nicer bokeh, f2.8 is no brainer

Yup. Nothing at all against the FE 24-205, which looks to be an excellent lens and great value. But it's not an adequate alternative to the 24-70 GM for all requirements.

24-70 is a pretty useable range.

F2.8 is way more useful than F4. Indoors at museums etc F4 is going to really push the ISO high. Outdoors the lighter weight and smaller size and longer reach would make it a good travel lens. Just use a faster prime for indoors if necessary.

I just used my 24-70GM in caves the last 2 days. It worked really well on A7r3 in very dim light. Instant AF, sharp pictures even with handheld and slow shutter. ISO was a bit high but chimping didn't seem to show much noise.

I have been in the same caves and used a Nikon D800e in the past which was disappointing, a Fuji XE1 which did reasonably well and now A7r3 which performed the best of any so far.

Greg.

Re: Should I get the 16-35 gm or 24-70 gm?

For my self I own the 24070GM and not using it that much. Its a great lens. But somehow I use the 16-35 f/4 more. Als the Loxia 35 and other primes are more used. That said every one is different rent and test it your self. What do you prefer. Choosing gea can be best done on own experience and not that of others
