They already make a number of 4k cameras: 5DIV, several camcorders and cinema bodies.

and not a single entry mid level dslr mirrorless or compacts so far

What's the deal with 4K videos. I got to LG OLED tv's, one without 4K and one with and I don't think I can tell any difference, of course because the 4K is bigger, I sit further away from it. I rather have a camera thats not 4k that takes smooth, nice videos, than higher resolution thats not smooth. Of course we may have both, but Im saying implementation of the video may have bigger impact on the overall quality that just resolution.

PS. Im a newby so I could be all wrong

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 V can only do 4K for five minutes.

I would like to see a G5X Mark 2. My wishlist is that:

1. It comes with a 24-100mm F2 constant aperture lens, 
2. The lens is sharp across the frame with minimal sample variation,
3. Performance/feature improvements present in the G7X Mark 2 be included (I guess this is a moot point), 
4. A fully tilting flash (that can tilt left, right, upwards, or at an angle) with sufficient power, to allow bouncing off a ceiling or a side wall,
5. Stiffer lens cover with better dust protection, and finally
4. No major size penalty. Let the camera be a few mm bigger along all dimensions if required. It's for the most part, unpocketable as it is.

Improvements in the sensor's ISO performance is always welcome. At this point, the ISO performance is no longer a deal breaker for me.

Compacts are dying slowly, giving way to smartphones.  Having used the CHDK hack for nearly a decade and Android for four years, I'm a believer in  creative open source software mods.  The cameras are all connected to broadband, so I'd like to see Canon open source its code and open an app store to let third party developers build and sell apps to draw out the best of the hardware.  It's clear that Canon is strategically crippling its cameras model by model, but I'm not so sure that's the best road to business success in the face of the smartphone revolution.

I seem to get the impression that rumours of Powershots in January are fading away. Another EOS-M body it seems but probably no lenses for it.

Hope springs eternal but I feel you are right on this one. Both the G1X III and the M100 were outed on the rumor sites well before the official announcement from Canon. We can only wait and see.

We probably won't see the M50 until CP+ on March 1st. Perhaps there will be a Powershot or two then too.

It seems that CES is primarily for dumb gadgets, like internet connected refrigerators.

The g3x and g5x are both due for a refresh. I would guess they get the standard mk ii treatment with the same minor tweaks. Maybe the g3x will get a built in VF? I think its a good idea, they are certainly useful with that much zoom and Canon included it again on the g1x series, so they seem to be moving away from the external option.

Cannot see any mention of Canon in the show reports. The Panasonic GH5S seems to be the only camera news of the show. Cameras seem to have dropped out of mainstream technology as items of any importance.

Next show is CP+ on March 1st in Japan. At least it is a camera show unlike CES.

Sigh. No Canon announcements so on to Japan. I saw a couple of pieces on the news shows this morning from CES and it was all about AI and robots. Sony had a robot puppy on the keynote.   So maybe Canon will include a G5X II in a robot kitten as part of its focus on increased innovation.
