Wish list for 2018?

I'm not sure how realistic this is, but I'd love to see...

E-P6:

Simply update the E-P5 with newer internals; keep the tilty (not flippy) screen; no EVF; keep the kinda standardized BLN-1 battery).

E-M3:

(The E-M1ii got too big for me.  I think the EM-1 is the perfect form factor).  Now that the EM-1ii has gotten bigger, they should bring back the shell of the EM-1 as the new EM-3. It would be the only Oly enthusiast camera with a flip screen and it would keep the BLN battery and hand grip.  They could add some (not all) of the EM-1ii internal upgrades.

Lenses:

The PRO primes are very nice, but not for me.  I love, and have all of, the 'premium primes.'  I'd like to see a few 'premium' zooms that focus on high quality at a small(ish) size.  For example, I'd love to have something like the new Panasonic 8-18 made by Olympus.

My wish is that Olympus releases a E-M5 Mark III. I would like the price of the E-M5 Mark II to come down so I can upgrade my E-M10 (Mark I).

I'd like to see a small, light (>200g), weather-sealed, 14mm prime.

And an LX-200 with better low light performance, and a better EVF.

And a camera body or firmware that adds the X-Pan aspect ratio

Leica Vario Elmar 35-100mm f/4-5.6

The tiny lens is a true gem and would deserve a premium edition with a smoother focusing ring and OIS and AF on/off switches.

Lots.... but for now

I would settle for FULL feature compatibility between Panasonic and Olympus lenses and bodies e.g.for focus peaking, IS etc. (Trap focus would be nice).

Cheers,

For 2018 I want the same I've always wanted for 50 odd years ........ the perfect shot. Never taken one and never seen one, so that's the goal and all I need to get or see.

All the best and have a good one with family and friends.

Danny.

EM1 mkii firmware update with better focus tracking and better focus accuracy on what it tracks (give the CAF performance of the standard CAF mode when in CAF+TR mode)

EM1 mkii firmware update to use only a small central focus point when initially selecting focus in tracking or multi-point AF modes.

Olympus pro 100-300f4 or 70-200f2.8

Invite from Olympus to all dpreview olympus users to test the new kit in Iceland (we’d do a far more thorough job than the press reps and pros they invited last time)!

Right now I am well blessed with what I have.

I do look forward to a "trip of a lifetime" to Egypt, Israel and Jordan, a chance to see that part of the world with a couple of cameras and lenses to boot.

Beyond Photography, perhaps a bit more sanity and peace in this world we call home.

This deserves its own topic. What is "the perfect shot"?

Part II: Will I know it if I see it?

My first wish is to not be enticed by any new gear so my wallet can recover from 2017's new camera and new computer, the latter in part necessitated by the new camera. Ouch.

Wish the second: FW improvements to my existing kit so as to not be tempted by new gear. Make me learn them a second time!

Wish the final: a D.A.M.+editing suite that completely replaces Lightroom, of which I have made purchase the final knowing my next camera (in 2019+) will put LR into a coma.

Cheers to all and seconded on making it safely to 2019.

Rick

Oh, just those little unrealistic things
5

My list is quite short and extremely unlikely to become reality.

True GM5 successor

The GM5 is the best Micro 4/3 camera ever made, it deserves a true successor. I can wait.

Low ISO oriented OM-D

Native ISO 100 and increased DR and tonal range at that ISO. Make the pixels larger and bring on 14-bit files if that's what it takes. Chasing high ISO is nice and all, but not everyone shoots sports in badly lit arenas or wildlife at dusk.

Telephoto macro

Make it weather resistant and compatible with the teleconverter. Something like 120mm f/2.5 or something like that. Just make sure to handle focus breathing decently so that it's not 50mm at macro range.

I'd love to see a compact and sharp wide angle prime (like the Panasonic 20mm, except maybe with a 10 or 10.5mm FL.) A max aperture of f/3.5 or f/4 would be fine. I think it would be nice to have something just a little wider than 24mm, but not with the more extreme distortion of wider angle lenses. This would complete my 3 prime lens dream travel kit (10.5mm, PL15mm, O45mm)! Bonus points if the lens was weather sealed, but still light like the other pancakes.

GM5 with a 20MP sensor, 12bit e-shutter capability, and a better EVF.  The rest the same.
