Just upgraded from 350D to 200D
3

Hello all, I couldn't find a subforum where we introduce ourselves, so I'm jumping right into it with my question.

I recently purchased a 200D to replace my aged 350D (my wife owns a 60D but I rarely use it). This was a camera I was looking forward to owning ever since it hit the rumour mill.

My question is, the RAW output from my 200D is noticeably flatter in colour than the RAW output from my 350D, or even the 60D. I'm sure each camera has a different picture style setting, however that setting should have no bearing on image quality in RAW when using Rawtherapee, should it?

Do you have the updated camconst.json. There is an updated version available with better SL2/200D support for RT 5.2 and newer

Well then WELCOME!

so I'm jumping right into it with my question.

Big congrats. You'll feel like you've hit light speed!

My question is, the RAW output from my 200D is noticeably flatter in colour than the RAW output from my 350D, or even the 60D. I'm sure each camera has a different picture style setting, however that setting should have no bearing on image quality in RAW when using Rawtherapee, should it?

If your camera settings (Picture Style, HTP, Contrast, etc) are the same as the other cameras, then there should only be minor differences. You could load them into Canon's DPP and verify that the camera's settings and output are good, if you wanted to (DPP is my converter of choice BTW).

Have fun and good luck!

I'm not familiar with Raw Therapee but any change it's applying some kind of custom profile? Lightroom uses an "Adobe Standard" profile by default but I prefer the Neutral profile. But in my case Neural gives me a flatter look, which I like as a starting point.

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade from my 400D.  Still works, but want something more modern.  Just being frank, need a new toy. Interesting, I'll read about the RAW processing.  I'm guessing that Digital Photo Professional is still bundled with the 200D/SL2?  So, should make RAW developing easy.  I guess I'll see.

Lots of folks use DPP, which comes free with every Canon camera, but any photo editor will handle Canon CR2 files without much trouble.  I use Snapseed on my IOS devices, and Polarr and Luminar on my OS X computers with no issues at all.  I do have DPP installed, but actually prefer my other editors now.  Opinions vary, but there's lots of good software out there.

True.  I've tried RawTherapee and it works well.  Just thought that the DPP might be more updated and more specific for the more modern Canon camera.  But, whatever works, works.  I'll try both out when I pull the plug and get a 200D/SL2.

I bought the white version fully aware of it's potential propensity to discolour, yet I'm extremely satisfied with it's performance, no regrets. I mean, ISO 6400 is better than ISO 400 in my 350D. The Asian version of the 200D does not have any software bundled with it, you will have to download it from the interwebs.

I want the white version also, tell me about the discoloration.  I hadn't heard about that, makes sense though.  I'm planning on getting the N. American version as I can't find the white version here(Belgium).

It's my expectation that it will eventually discolour. Still far too new a body for anyone to already experience it yet.

Have you heard about other Canon white bodies discoloring? (You originally mentioned it being a "Propensity").

I haven't seen it in any of my "white" lenses yet BTW.

Mine does get dark fingerprints on it occasionally when I'm outdoors and have a bit of dirt or grime on my hands. I've searched the internet for discoloration in Canon white bodies, but haven't found anything conclusive yet. However it is difficult to believe that a light coloured plastic will keep its original colour forever without developing some sort of patina; this isn't a coating, it's the actual colour of the plastic.

I'm assuming your white lenses are L ones? They're more of a dark grey and they're paint on a metal surface, which for the most part you won't handle much; certainly not as much as a camera body.

Re: Just upgraded from 350D to 200D

So, you think that the sun would cause the discoloration?  This would be a defect.  I would imagine that Canon would have thought this through.  Maybe I'll wait for a bit to see if there are any complaints.  I do want this camera, but prefer it in white, just to be different.

It gets you noticed for sure, and honestly, it's been a great camera for me so far. I shared my expectations based on my past experiences. I wouldn't be at all sad if I was wrong in this instance.

Me either.  Zip.

Depends on the chemical composition (and stabilizers) of the plastic used in the manufacturing.  For example polymers such as UHMV and PET are very resistant, whereas ABS and CPVC are much more susceptible to staining.

I've actually put several hundred thousand snaps through my L lenses over the past 10+ years  .  Canon has done a good job with the finish IME.

I wonder what material the body is made from? Somewhere I read it is a composite, but a composite of what? I'd assume it would be a composite using polycarbonate for durability.

I think the finish on L lenses is some sort of paint or coating over metal or perhaps in a few cases, plastic. We've figured out how to get paints and coatings stable when exposed to continuous sun exposure or everyone's house and cars would yellow in little time.

One nice thing about a white camera is when your out shooting in the hot sun, the camera won't get as hot as with a black one.

A person could check with earlier white camera owners such as the M and M2, or even white SL1's to see how the finish stands up.  Plus there have been white P&S cameras for quite some time.  And Sony has had a ton of white cameras over the years as well.  We could get some sort of track record.
