Lenses you keep because they are too good to give away....

None. Use or sell is my creed. On the positive side it, frees up cash and puts the lens in circulation. Why keep a lens on a shelf when someone can make good use of it? On the negative side, you never know when you might decide that you can use an unused lens. It's a risk worth taking.

Olympus 12/2 (silver version) - Made in Japan
3

I will keep this little gem forever, though I use the 14, 15 and 20 quite a bit more often than the 12/2. I also own the Oly 7-14 and 9-18, so it's hard for the 12 to claim its space in my bag or pocket, but when I use it, I do use it (often in a combo with the 45/1.8).

Once I thought about replacing my silver 12/2 with a black version, but hell no, this my beloved little lens was made in Japan once upon a time, and it is sharp as a tack, and it does look sexy in silver too, and last but not least it renders images very beautifully for my tastes.

Some people claim that this lens is "no better than the Oly 12-40" and therefore they got rid of the 12/2, but I say it is a smaller lens, it is a faster lens and maybe it is sharper too (at the same apertures). Frankly I don't care about sharpness that much as I favor small fast primes over big and bulky zooms anyway.

The 4/3 50mm f/2 Macro is the one lens I sometimes regret having sold, mainly because it is a true “reference lens” for the system (and I am a true geek). I use my 60mm f/2.8 Macro far more and with greater satisfaction than I ever did my 50mm.

Dennis, the f/2 50 macro is just stunning on my E-M1 MkII with its cross AF points, and better AF on my E-M1 MkI than it was on any of my FTs bodies, in almost all cases.

John,

I sold that lens in in a sudden fit of frugality (along with my 50-200mm SWD and 12-60mm SWD, adapters), when I was funding the purchase of my PL 100-400mm.

😢💦

That's really good to know. I've got 2 G1's and 2 14-45's, so I ll send one away to be IR converted.

Panny 100-400 ....

I keep it because it's too costly to sell cheap or give away. Eventually I will give it away to a dear friend/relative.

Having a less than unlimited budget for lenses, I find that if I don't use a lens for a while, it gets sold, no matter what I get for it.

On the other hand, there are lenses I don't use much, but treasure when I do, so they aren't going anywhere....the Oly 12mm f2 for instance.  I mostly use the 12-35mm when I am out and about, since the zoom is very convenient, but the 12mm Oly has some total magic to its rendering, and I won't get rid of it, even if I don't use it that often.

I suppose the only lens I have that I am truly ambivalent about is the diminutive Panasonic 35-100mm f3.5-5.6.  It's nice and contrasty, and has surprisingly little CA for a kit zoom, but it's a focal range that I just about never use, so it's not really useful for me.  I only keep it because it's really tiny and handy to have in my pocketbook for impromptu photo ops, along with the GM5.

Other than that, I don't keep lenses around that I don't use.  I'm even thinking of selling my PL 25mm f1.4, since I simply just don't seem to use that focal length.....great lens, but why tie up a few hundred dollars if I am not using it?

I keep nothing I don't use but I wonder whether I shoulda kept my Oly 14-150 ii and 9mm BCL as they were the core of my alternative ultimate compact travel kit... all went into a holster (with 17mm f1.8).

These are indeed too good to give away, but with the 12-40 almost permanently on my E-M5-II and the 7-14 and 40-150 (both f/2.8) ready in the bag, who needs the primes...

I know what you mean... but in a room at night or a restaurant.. f1.7/8 is wonderful and as they are so small and not worth a million dollars.. worth putting into the recesses of your bag hey?

At one time I had ten Four Thirds lenses. Then I switched to M4/3. At first I used a MMF-2 adapter with many of them, but eventually I replaced them with M4/3 lenses. So nine Four Thirds lenses got sold off or given away.

But I kept one of my lenses. I kept my 11-22mm lens because it is an absolutely wonderful lens. Plus, there is no M4/3 equivalent, and it would be too painful to sell it for $150 or whatever it might fetch on ebay.

I really don't use this lens much lately, but I think I just have an emotional attachment to it.

I know what you mean. I kept the 50/2 for the same reason. It's probably worth $50. I almost sold the 50-200 but I stumbled on an image I took with it and the rendering is so beautiful I'm not sure I can part with it even though I own the 40-150 PRO and the 1.4XTC for it. The 50-200 is longer because I have the TC for that too.

M43 lenses can be a little sharper and they seem to control problems better but they don't; render as beautifully as the 4/3 lenses do, not to my taste. I'm trade sharpness and detail for rendering sometimes. Can't do a good job of explaining it, but I know it when I see it.

Certainly worth putting into the recesses of my bag, so I sometimes do, but rarely end up using them...

I just got the 9mm BCL fisheye, and have been having a blast with it.  That's one that I wouldn't get rid of, myself.   Maybe you should pick another one up?

The 40mm f2 Leitz Minolta CL adapted to a compact Olympus PEN body.

The 20mm f1.7 Panasonic first version for m43.  To my mind, it has Leica-like image qualities and it would not surprise me if Leica had had a hand in the design before they got around to double-labeling collaborative efforts.

The Lumix 14/2.5 on any body but particularly on the E-PM 1. Maybe it's an exceptional example. It pops with 3-D like effect.

I sold the 20 and haven't used the 45 in a year. Just not finding myself where I need f/1.7/8. I should probably see the 45.
