Downloading Picture Styles from camera - is it possible?

Hi,

I am planning to sell my trusty 450D which has some quite good custom Picture Styles on it. As I could not find the .pf2 files on my PC I'd like to ask you if it is possible to download these styles from the camera?

I could not find any information on it online, so might just be impossible (for the standard user at least) but I thought it'd worth asking.

Thank you!

Canon's Picture Style editor

Your camera came with (and if you haven't got it you can download it) the Picture Style editor.  Not tried it but I assume it is a two way thing ie you can copy from camera as well as to camera.

check if they're hiding in a \pf2\ folder in your DPP directory, e.g.

C:\Program Files\Canon\Digital Photo Professional\pf2

EOS Utility is used to upload custom picture styles from the computer to the camera. I don't think it or PS Editor or DPP has a feature for downloading from the camera.

If these custom picture styles were developed/published by Canon or other third party, they're likely still available online.

e.g. "Autumn Hues", "Emerald", "Twilight", etc. from Canon: http://www.canon.co.jp/imaging/picturestyle/index.html

Flickr sharing forum: https://www.flickr.com/groups/canoncustompicturestyles

If they're simply modifications you made with the slider controls to the built-in styles, you can easily reproduce them with the same slider settings. If you built them from scratch in PS Editor, then maybe you kept some notes on their creation?

From what I've read I don't think you can do it. Within the picture style editor there is an option to lock any files that you've created and this makes them inaccessible so I would guess that Canon have done the same with their in-camera styles.

In any case picture styles seem to more than just the basic controls of sharpness, hue etc so I would suggest they may be specific to the model of camera that they were designed for.

Thank you for the replies! I made these Picture Styles long ago and I have switched SSD since then - but probably have that drive somewhere, so I can check the path in the Picture Stlye Editor folders - if this is still the same Windows install I had back then...

These weren't made with just the slider adjustments as we couldn't replicate them on an other 450D with just these settings.

Thanks again!

Re: Downloading Picture Styles from camera - is it possible?

Further to my earlier reply I've had a play with the Picture Style editor.  I don't have my 450D any more so there are variations, the 700D editor having more control.

Anyway it seems as if it all based on the assumption you are post-processing RAW, so I suspect that any in-camera settings are non-saveable or transferable.

However, if you were to take photo in RAW using each of the picture styles then from what I can see those settings are seen in the Picture Style editor and and be saved to your computer.  This isn't going to be of much use if you're not shooting/processing  RAW though as I don't see any option to upload to my 700D.

I'm fairly sure if I had set them up on the 450D I wouldn't be using the same settings on the 700D though as it processes differently even with ostensibly the same defaults.

This is something I could definitely check. Thank you, Anthony!
