GH4 Shutter Priority Auto ISO Trick with 15mm 1.7 Lens

Hello everybody. So I saw a video about shooting in shutter priority, and auto iso, with a lens that has a manual aperture ring. That way the only thing that changes is the iso. For what I shoot, this would be perfect. I have the Panasonic 15m 1.7 lens that has the aperture ring, but when I put it into shutter priority, the ring goes to automatic even if I spin it out of auto mode. Is there anything I can do to lock the lens into whatever f stop I spin it to? I would love for the auto iso trick to work...

Are we talking stills or video? Because for stills, you can obviously do this in manual mode.

For video, if for some reason you want auto ISO, you could try shooting Aperture priority at a fixed shutter angle. This should do the trick, although I don't have a GH4 here to test it out now.

Sounds to me like the question is: does the aperture ring work at all in S mode?

Difficult to know what the Panasonic engineers decided. I wouldn't be surprised if their philosophy is that if you want control over both shutter speed and aperture, you should switch to M.

Unfortunately you can't do this trick with the 15mm f/1.7. All the Panasonic aperture ring does is electronically tell the camera which aperture to select  - it won't function in shutter priority.

You'll need a fully manual or adapted lens with a mechanical aperture ring to do this.

I tried putting the camera in A mode, and the f stop is visible on screen which I can change, and the ISO is in automatic, which I want, but the shutter disappears which I am guessing means it isn't fixed. Am I missing something?

No, I meant in video mode. Set it to aperture exposure with a fixed shutter angle. Not sure if it works with the GH4, but it doesn't hurt to try.

My GX8 can have auto ISO in M mode, but my GX7 can't. I don't know what the GH4 has...

Oh, and by the way, this difference is one of the most annoying differences when switching between the two cameras, and the main reason why I'm thinking of replacing my beloved GX7.

You are missing the ability to see GH4 automatic exposure values. When the SS disappears in A mode it means it works automatically.

Panasonic has decided to hide all automatic exposure values in video modes. It makes lost of confusion and leads to wrong exposure combinations for video.
