How do I get photos off G9X Mark II to a Mac?

Disclaimer, I'm a tech guy but not a Mac guy or a camera guy.  I bought my wife a G9X and she uses a Mac.

I've tried wifi, the camera sees her computer and says it connects, but when I run CameraWindow on her computer it says No Camera Was Found.

I tried a USB cable.  I turn on the camera in playback mode.  From everything I read, the Mac Photos program is supposed to automatically start, but it doesn't.  I ran it manually and don't see any options to allow importing.  I have no idea if the Mac even sees that the camera is connected to a USB port.  Do I need to disable WiFi on the camera or something?

Any help appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: How do I get photos off G9X Mark II to a Mac?

My G9Xii doesn't show up as a device on my Mac using the USB cable - it doesn't show up in the Finder. I use both the Mac Image Capture and Photos apps to offload images. Both apps are included with your Mac. In either app, the camera shows up in the left sidebar (in the Photos app select View > Show Sidebar). I click on the camera name and all images on the camera are displayed; you can import all or selected images.

I'm not sure this makes a difference, but I always power the camera on in normal mode, not playback.

I'm running Sierra so if you've installed High Sierra things may be different.

I have used the Canon Android app but not for a while but I know it's not called CameraWindow, which I thought was obsolete (but not sure).

Instead of trying to get the software from working, I found getting a USB SD  and reader is the fastest and most simply way to move files on my computer for editing.

+1

it's the most painless way indeed!

And some Macs have even built-in SD slots (iMac, MacBookAir and older models of MacBookPro).

Hi.

Canon Camera Window was obsoleted/replaced with Canon Camera Connect.

Easiest way - and fastest - is a card reader.  Universally accepted on both Apple & PC, very low cost, and reliable.

Thanks for the explanation, but I'm neither a tech guy OR a computer guy.  Would you mind explaining a bit further for the tech-challenged (me)?  For instance, what you mean by "USB SD reader?"   I have a ton of pictures I need to remove from my G9x, and I have a Mac, but am NOT interested in going thorugh the whole rig-a-ma-role of the icloud, web service, Canon-in-the-sky stuff!    Any simplification would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks again!

I'd assume that your camera uses SD card.

The easiest and simplest way to download photos to iMac:

- Open Photos program by clicking on Photos icon located in the dock at the bottom of your screen (it looks like a a small rosette in rainbow colours)

- Extract SD card from your camera and insert it into a SD slot located on the back of your computer

- Photos from the camera will be displayed on the screen.

- in the upper right corner you will be given an option to import new photos to your computer. Click on it.

- All photos will be downloaded from the SD card to your computer and placed exactly where you want them to be, which is in Photos program.

- Close Photos program (or slide it downwards so you can see your main screen called desktop)

- on the desktop screen find a symbol that looks like a SD card. It may have a Name, or named No Name.

- Right click on it. A menu window will open up.

- Click on the second option from the top, called "Eject ......"

- Pull out SD card from the slot.

- open again Photos program. You will see all downloaded photos in reduced size.

- Double click on any of the photos. A large one will fill up the screen.

- Now you are ready to do with it whatever you wish. I usually go to EDIT (in the upper right corner of the screen and process it.)

Now, you will like to insert your SD card back into the camera, then find FORMAT menu in the camera and format SD card to delete all the photos that you do not need any more. Caveat: if you think that the card contains very valuable photos, like let say your family wedding, than keep the card untouched until you are satisfied with the safety of downloaded photos on your computer. But this is another chapter to learn for you.

Thanks for the response, but I'm afraid it won't help me, since my iMac has only USB slots.  Except for the one wide one which is not the same as to match the card from the camera..any suggestions or an adapter?
