To be honest, it looks a bit like it's been processed to death. The overall image is very flat, as though some sort of heavy tone-mapping has been applied to it. It would be interesting to compare with the OOC photo.

I have the Dng file so here is a jpg straight out of PS...no processing. Would love for you to work your magic because it is pretty flat and such a dull day...

I'd probably do the same sort of thing: unsharp mask, tweak the levels and contrast, but only do it a little bit, something along the lines of this, though starting from a jpeg you can't do too much anyway:

That looks a lot better. I think I also used Perfectly Clear and the dehaze filter. Thanks for your help I will have another attempt tomorrow.

I prefer this original. Draws me in. Nearly dreamy.

(First post looks too CGI which all digital photos are of course. Whlist processing by fellow forumees where things are sharper clearer is too in your face too immediate thereby lacks ability to draw me in).

fabulous subject and good shot,  The color feels a little muted and I would have cropped out the sky and a bit of the foreground but thats me and its not my image well done. Tell your bro is wonderful

Really such a gorgeous image to play with, would be even more fun to have the DNG, here is my humble offering.

You can get a really superb 3D like quality from the smoke with the right adjustments.  With the DNG I would have been able to take the yellowish grass down a notch closer to brownish.

The man taking a picture up top and the people down at the bottom add so much additional interest that invites a person to stare at this one for awhile.

This picture has high potential for a wall print.

Heres a B&W for fun as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I agree, it will make a great print for hanging on the wall.

A classic north of England shot, but the PP is somewhat lacking imo. Any idea what engine it was.
