I really don't get Olympus's approach to selling the hoods separately, it's very strange. They must sell enough to justify it though, or they are losing money on them. This lens is on my want list for sure. I have a 25, want a 45, then the 75. Perfect m43 set up for portrait shoots.

Good news, buy the JJC hood. I have compared it to the "original" one and there seems to be zero (aka "no") difference (besides the price tag). I guess it's from the same factory ...

Not quite true if you're talking about the black one. The JJC version of the black one is matte and the Olympus one is semi-gloss, which matches the lens paint – if looks are important to you I mean.

OK, this might be a difference.

In fact, I was comparing my silver JJC hood with a friend's black Olympus hood. Mechanics seemed very very identical, but the paint/finish may be different.

Few dreadful test shots
2

What a dreadful day. Only managed to grab a few lousy snaps. It seems there is some colour fringing in OOF areas. Green behind the focus plane, blue/purple in front. I guess this might be a bit of a pain on slightly miss-focused shots.

Everything converted with Darktable with very minimal sharpening and no lens corrections of any kind.

Obligatory wall shot. Not particularly good, as it was not shot perfectly perpendicular to the wall. But the sign is lighted up, so I was wondering if any purple fringing would show up. But I guess that's hardly enough light to provoke that.

Nice and sharp.

An example of a typical purple flare that's very common on MFT. But frankly, in a situation like this, I was expecting much worse.

The flares from before are no more, as the headlights change position relative to the camera.

Stopped down the headlights loose the blueish glow, but small green flares appear. Still, not bad.

I guess realistically Sunday is my best bet to get some actual shooting done with it.

I’m looking to buy the GM5 as a backup body to supplement my gargantuan E-M1.

Sounds great that you think it works nicely with the 75mm, I had intended to couple it primarily with my PL 25mm f1.4 and lovely little Oly 45mm. Thanks for the Matis tip, I’ll check it out

(You think the 12-32mm zoom is worthwhile? The body lacks IBIS, and it’s really tiny, but...)

In good light, the 12-32 is a worthy addition to the GMs. In low light the PL and Oly primes will work beautifully with it.

Would also suggest the tiny 35-100 as well. Very handy tele zoom when the light is OK and sharp too.

Of course, both of these lenses give stabilisation. I have used the 75 on the GM1. Just don't try to push the envelope too much as far as shutter speed goes and you will love it.

A lovely lens with no flaws worth mentioning.

I have discovered that at f1.8 and if doing a portrait of two people standing next to each other and framing chest up that depth of field is a lottery for getting both faces tack sharp. F2.8 works here and bokeh is still smooth.

Jonas, the 75/1.8 obviously has no OIS and neither has the GM5 body but this has not given me any issues in use - it is a fast lens and the whole outfit is light and compact.  It will complement the Oly 45 very well.

The hood is made by the Korean Matin company (not Matis) and is not expensive and a substitute for the oem hood which does not come in the box and is expensive.  The filter thread is 58mm so you will need the hood to be the same.  It works by a two-component set up - a bayonet adpater screws into the filter thread and the hood bayonets in either direction to it.  There is another filter thread supplied for those that wish to also mount a filter.  The hood itself is bell shaped - presumably to clear multiple lens shapes that have 58mm threads.  The hood is made of reasonably good quality plpastic and seems effective.

(You think the 12-32mm zoom is worthwhile? The body lacks IBIS, and it’s really tiny, but...)

The kit 12-32mm zoom is an excellent lens and has OIS.

Too bad such a gorgeous lens does not come with a hood in the box. And 75 EUR for a lens hood is absurd.

Hopefully I'll have some photos to show tomorrow.

Trick is to buy this lens in the Oly Portrait kit, during holiday pricing.

Basically you'll get the 45mm + 75mm + cases for both + hoods for both, all for the same price as MSRP on the 75m alone.

Bought my kit last November. Looks like its back on special again this year for the same price.

Not sure if the same special extends round the globe but for others watching...

+1

12-32 + 35-100 (tiny version) + GM5 = best IQ and versatility under 1lb of any camera "setup" I know of.

Proper full res samples
1

Finally got to take some proper if a bit hasty shots yesterday and processed a few today.

I am still very much impressed by the performance.

All photos processed in Darktable with very minimal adjustments. And I really do mean minimal:

  • no cropping or straightening
  • no lens corrections of any kind (dostortion, CA, vignetting)
  • no defringing
  • no noise reduction unless stated
  • minimal (less than the defaults) sharpening unless stated otherwise

A bit of chroma NR and mild sharpening with parameters chosen as to not affect the noise.

That was a good candidate to be shot wide open, but unfortunately I have only this

Bokeh balls are nice and round, but you can see greenish fringes around them. So far, this seems to be the only real flaw of this lens.

This one was underexposed so I raised the exposure by 1 stop in post and also applied some conservative amounts of noise reduction.

Had to raise exposure by half a stop. No sharpening at all, same conservative noise reduction as with the one above. I was really happy to have IBIS here. I did lean onto a pole to stabilise myself, but still...

Ugly concrete blocks brought to you by Allah*

To sum it up, I'm really happy with those shots. I was kinda expecting issues with artificial lighting at night, but there's not much to complain there. There is a lot of blue fringing in the last one, around that strong blue lamp, but that's not surprising at all. Also, Darktable actually doesn't deal too well with blue fringing like that.

A have some more "testing" kind of shots that I will probably post later. In general there is a noticeable (as in, you can notice it) difference in sharpness between wide open and f/2.5 or so. So basically what already turned up on my test chart shots, so no surprises there. Only in real world DoF often makes this a bit harder to actually spot.

*as in, there were none of those around Christmas markets until someone decided to murder a lot of people in Allah's name. Actually, I wonder if those blocks would even be effective in stopping a speeding 15 ton truck.

I know you are very critical so a very good endorsement for this lens. And I concur!
