Olympus Cancels 400mm f4 lens
24

After years of planning, development and testing, Olympus is considering cancelling the production of a 400mm f4 lens. This lens was going to be one of the most superlative lenses ever made by Olympus; however, after extensive surveying, it was discovered that it might only meet the needs of a very small minority.

The comprehensive survey undertaken in 2016 and 2017 revealed the following:

  • 51% said it would be too big
  • 65% said it would be too heavy
  • 33% said it wouldn’t be fast enough
  • 35% said they’d prefer an f5.6 lens
  • 16% said they’d prefer a f6.3 lens
  • 72% said they didn’t want a 400mm lens
  • 11% said they wanted a 500mm lens
  • 93% said it had to cost less than US$2000
  • 84% said it had to cost less than US$1500
  • 1.2% said they would be extremely happy with such a lens and might buy it
  • 0.05% said they’d buy it
  • 22% wanted a pancake lens
  • 76% asked why did it have to be so big, FF lenses are smaller
  • 87% asked why did it have to be so expensive, FF lenses are cheaper
  • 23% said they preferred Fuji
  • 64% said they were looking at Sony

Olympus is considering doing another survey and not use DP Review as a study group.

Heh. Are you sure it isn't because of some Japanese avoidance of the number 4?

Cheers,

Oh, yeah - and since it’s a 2x crop factor on μ4/3, it would compete directly with the Olympus 400mm f/4, so only 1/2 the potential customers would buy it.

But maybe that would be equivalent to f/5.6.

No, wait, maybe Olympus could call it an 800mm, but then I’d have to multiply to an f/8.  Dang, just can’t win.

Wait a minute.  Aren’t these both native μ4/3?  Let’s see, if I convert to the reference for all photography Full Frame for each of these, then add a 2x teleconvertor...

Now my head hurts.

I’m going to switch to Fuji GFX, tired of having to do all of those pesky crop factor conversions every time I want to get a new μ4/3 lens.

😜

Luckily, Panasonic has stepped up to the plate, & will offer a 200 f/2.8, with a couple of teleconverters to suit. Jump on in while you can.

As opposed to getting younger and wiser, I suppose? That would be a nice trick.

Interesting... I heard 67% said it would only have the DOF of an 800mm f8 lens and gather pixel satisfying light of a FF 400mm f8.

Interesting, there is a market though ..
2

for a 400 F/2.8 at 250 grams with a diameter of 35mm and a length of 75mm which costs $325 US.

There is certainly a market for a lens like that Ray, so they might change yet.

All the best Ray, I'm holding my breath ...... blue suits me.

Actually Olympus has a patent in the USA for a 400mm f4 and a 500mm f4.  They also have a fairly large number of recent patents for FF lenses.  I wonder what the survey results are for those.
