Canon Pro-4000
5

I ordered a Pro-4000 from ITsupplies.com and happy to report a great experience. Their listing stated ships with 330ml ink tanks https://www.itsupplies.com/Canon-imagePROGRAF-PRO-4000-Printer-44in-Wide-Format-1127C002AA Other online retailers state ships with 190ml tanks. I reached out to ITsupplies before ordering and they confirmed 330ml ink set so I made the purchase 10/16/2017.

10/23/2017 it arrived at my home via tractor-trailer (semi) . The shipper was great, called to arrange delivery day and time frame. I asked they have a pallet jack to get into the garage and they obliged.

Two of us handled carrying the printer just fine but it's place in the home is up stairs which required 3 of us to lift on end as it has a tight corner, rest was easy.

On to the inks as it was the big reason I chose to order from ITsupplies. Now looking on Canon's web site they show it shipping with 300ml starter set. https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/professional-large-format-printers/professional-photo-fine-art/imageprograf-pro-4000
All other online retailers showed 190ml, which is what mine came with. I wrote an e-mail to ITsupplies and they quickly replied it must be older inventory and they contacted Canon on my behalf and a full set of 160ml inks arrived 11/01/2017 for a total of 350ml of ink. Very happy with the timely replies and action taken.

The printer itself I am very pleased with so far. I was up and running pretty quick to use canon papers. It did take some time to learn how to fully get Breathing Color AM1x media settings on both the printer and lightroom classic cc. Then getting XPS which allows the printer to accept images files greater than 8bit. Installing the Print studio pro plug in for LR classic CC gave me issue too. But after all of that was figured out with help here on this forum and LL I am up and running.

I have only printed from a sample pack of paper from Breathing Color and have some rolls due to arrive today. I have read many complaints on using cut sheet paper on the Pro-2000/4000/6000. My experience so far is that it is ok. I get an out of alignment error now and then but usually feeds and ready to print. I have a few rolls due to arrive today so looking forward to that experience.

Canon has a rebate in the USA currently for $300. I was very pleased one is able to fill that out online with attaching the receipt file. Status of that is approved but waiting for arrival.

Keith Cooper has fantastic write ups, one on the Pro-2000,4000 as well. http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro2000-setup/
If you are looking at a Pro-4000 I would inquire about the ink set shipped from who you purchase from. They use to ship with 190ml and currently per Canon ship with 300ml. Very worth the inquire in my opinion.
Cheers,
Josh

Congrats, bro, on your new Pro-4000. Check out Jared Polin(Fro Knows Photo) on YouTube. He has a video on the Pro-4000, where he made a monster print on Canon Pro-Luster.

Thank you Rob, I seen the Jared Polin videos of it arriving and the one of it printing 44" paper. The image of him sitting on top of the crate gives a great representation of the size of delivery. The printer is good sized, had a friend over and he first thought it was a piano.
I didn't have the extra roller so his had an extra box. This is mine just delivered in the garage.

Thank you Michael it is a beast but for such a beast looks quite nice. Wife isn't complaining and as stated earlier a friend first thought it was a piano.

I recently bought a PRO-1000 and my wife was stunned about the size. When I showed her a image of the PRO-4000 I got her absolution.

So you made my day

I was looking for an avatar like "426 Hemi".   That wood mount is something I saw on You Tube and just took it from there.  When I started making my own frames, I was surprised that I sold way more prints mounted on the simple wood structure than I did that were mounted in a standard type frame.  But, I was told by a lady that the framed images have a much better chance at conflicting with a potential customer's decor.  I guess I'm not left brained enough to have figured that out.

I had a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner with a 383 in highschool, sold it 7 years ago now. Never owned a 426 Hemi or any other. Have used the handle man4mopar since I started my first e-mail roughly 20 years ago. My current Mopar is powered by Cummins though
Your left brain is working just fine, you explored which I think is the most fun way to learn. Is great you shared your exploration as well! I mounted a 8"x8" on what they call hardboard, when I was a teen we called it Masonite, used it for skate board ramps. I have some improvement to do on the edge and corners but for a first attempt it shows promise I think. I didn't make the easel holding the image, I saw it in a Michaels craft store and thought it would look pretty cool.

I had a friend that had a '69 Road Runner and another that had a Javelin....remember those?   In the mean time, I had a '55 Chevy, 350 4 bolt motor, lotsa' cam, Torquer intake, Holley 780 double pumper, of course, Hooker headers and the big fuelie heads.  Wish I still had it!  It was a fun stop light gran prix car.

I've been experimenting with Masonite as a substitute for the plywood.  So far, it's worked well.  As you know, it has a slick finish, so I give it a shot with an orbital sander to allow the glue to work a bit better.  It's certainly less expensive than plywood and is MUCH smoother.  Matter of fact, I have a print waiting to be glued onto a frame I just made using Masonite.

That 55 Chevy sounds like it was a lot of fun! Been a long time since I have seen a AMC Javelin. Been a long time since I have been in a warm climate when classic cars are out and about too though so that isn't shocking.
I look forward to hearing your views on mounting to Plywood or Masonite. I just picked up a 4'x8' sheet of Birch veneer plywood for $20 to try out. It is pretty smooth but not Masonite smooth.

Re: Canon Pro-4000

You'll like the birch veneer.  Pretty much what I use other than the Masonite.

I like the idea of mounting on a piece of wood or Masonite.  It looks much more professional than foam board and it is stiff.  Are you going to stain the exposed wood?

Plan is to stain everything accept where the print gets glued on. I plan to keep the frame 2" from the edge to give the image a float look. I have some straight 1"x2" wood for sides/bottom and a 1"x4" I plan to angle cut down the center for a top piece on the frame and other to mount on the wall.

Current plan is let image set 24 hours after printing then 24 hours after glued to wood apply UV coating. All ears if you recommend a different approach.

Re: Canon Pro-4000

I always let my prints sit for a couple days before doing anything with them.  Epson recommends that they sit for 24 hours to degas.  Once I glue the print onto the frame, I let it sit overnight to ensure that I didn't goof it up.  Then I give it a couple coats of lacquer.  Your plan works!

Here is my second mount attempt. I did it on the Birch veneer 1/4" plywood cut to 24"x48". On the back I used a frame as described above 2" recessed from edge.
I made the image slightly larger than 24"x48" and cut the excess with a razor knife. I have one blemish from the cut as the paper separated, not sure why. Will try removing that with another cut from the top with a straight edge, may need to stain the minor exposed wood left after cut, 1/16" maybe.
