85 F/1.4L IS is difficult to make the background swirly, while not difficult for the foreground. On the other hand, 85 F/1.2 makes both sides without any difficult.

Enjoy some samples.

Swirly backgrounds are terrible!

Is that really something you want?

So far these results aren't much different from the 85mm f1.8.

Oh, finally we agree on something!

I knew something was up when it became

clear that the 85mm 1.2 II would remain in the line up.

The lens will be good of course, but, well...

I do not think it is swirly. There are some double lines, unfortunately, when pushed too hard.

Honestly, the rendering is more similar to 85mm 1.8 lens than 85ii, none of the pictures I’ve seen so far would mix well with 85L 1.2 or 135L epic shots.

Re: bokeh test

Isn’t this consistent with the new canon 1.4 lenses.  The 35mm has a less appealing bokeh than the mk l.  The new glass and their drive for edge to edge sharpness seems to have affected bokeh.

That is totally not true. The old 35mm is not good bokeh wise, the new one does quite a good job.

The new glass and their drive for edge to edge sharpness seems to have affected bokeh.

That seems to be not true either. This lens, at closer focus, seems to have smoother bokeh than the f1.2. At more distant focus, it seems to break down a bit. But the f1.2 never had flawless bokeh itself.

Yeah, I think what people are commenting on is technique, not lens quality. If you set up your model at a distance that is not good for the background you're going to get poor results.

Final Review
2

The final review by the same reviewer of the original post.

http://ran.innori.com/878

In the review the pictures before flare tests seem to have been taken with 85 F/1.2 L long time ago. It is the first part of the review. The second part of the post is filled with recycled materials that show the performance of the new lens. Then, some comparisons between 85 1.2 and 85 1.4 follow and the reviewer makes a long concluding remark with a bunch of test shots.

In summary,
85 F/1.2 is slow, but artistic.
85 F/1.4 is an all-round player.

Because he has been familiar to 85 1/2 for 6 years, he won't change his old lens with the new one. However, if he started from scratch, he would choose the new one because of his moving children.
