85mm 1.4 L IS preview
8

Here is a preview of the coming lens, though it is written in Korean.

http://www.slrclub.com/bbs/vx2.php?id=canon_fgallery&no=4381920

Summary:

1. Flares are reduced very much. When they appears, they are not cold but warm unlike the latest Canon lenses.

2. Chromatic aberration are also reduced very much, but not to the degree of Canon 35L II.

more portrait samples:

http://www.slrclub.com/bbs/vx2.php?id=canon_fgallery&no=4381938

3. IS noise is low, but not good enough for video.

4. Very fast AF, of course.

Do you know if the images in the article are taken with the new 85 or are they taken with the 1.2?

All of them seem to be taken by the new 85 1.4L IS.

You can do a left-click to see their EXIFs.

Most of them are f/1.4. Some of them are f/1.6 and f/2.0.

m more concerned about the shots that show the large amount of purple fringing, that looks more like what i expect from the 85 1.2

not right click, but left click on the images. Interestingly, I can use google translate with the text.

and... the writer says that purple fringing is reduced much, compared to that of 85L 1.2, though it is still there. He has used 85 1.2L for quite a long time. I think the examples show the extreme case.

Moreover, he expects that the chromatic aberration can be corrected in software to some degree.

That amount of CA is not exactly comforting. I have considerably less CA on my Tamron G2 85mm wide open (okay, 1.8 vs. 1.4 - but still, this shot using the new Canon doesn't look good...)

The level of CA in those samples are completely unacceptable for a lens made in 2017. Hopeful that is not a production model... if it is you can take my name off the list.

Here is an example of pretty bad LoCA:

Re: CA Monster

I agree. Take a look at image 26/59 here:

https://www.dpreview.com/sample-galleries/6995506461/canon-ef-85mm-f1-4l-is-usm-sample-gallery

It is of a road surface and there is an apparent horizontal magenta stripe with a green stripe behind it due to the CA. DPP seems to be able to improve it but not eliminate it.

hmm...nasty CA (heavy purple fringe) for a lens this exciting and anticipated. hold on to your 85 f1.2 lenses, folks

Re: CA Monster

I may have been a little harsh in the original statement, but I stand behind this is too much CA for a $1600 lens. Canon's samples prove DPP is reasonably good at removing it, but if the $100 50mm 1.8 STM is better than a newer $1600 lens with updated coatings, Canon has an issue. I get that a 1.4 lens is always going to have some aberration, but it just seems like more than what should be expected. Yes the 85mmm Art, and I suspect the Otus will have some, but I'll also venture out to say it's likely going to be significantly less than this one (I'm guessing about 50%). I honestly can't justify a lens at that price, where Canon expects its user to shoot it at narrow apertures or do a lot of lens correcting in post.

Oh well, maybe they'll get it right in their version 2.

Do you have any link for the lenses of other brands, such as Sony 85G, Nikon 85N, and Sigma 85Art?

Re: 85mm 1.4 L IS preview

Lots of people love the f/1.2 despite the horrible CA. In fact, the reason I got rid of mine was mostly because of the inconsistent and slow focusing. If this f/1.4 version improves significantly on the focus accuracy and speed, then I think it will do well despite there still being some CA. I know I will be considering buying one... I don't consider the difference between f/1.2 and f/1.4 to be a deal breaker.  With that said though... That image showing the very worst CA... I thought that red was the color of the material!  That is ridiculously bad!

All three mentioned above are on DPR's lens review section. Just select the lens and click the "Sample" tab. Just note, I don't know if all of them are raw in regards to applied corrections.

1.2 AF inconsistency ends with the new AF Dual. Is night and day.
