90mm Test Shots
21

So, I had purchased the 90mm on clearance a few days back..

I must admit, I was never interested in this lens because I felt that the focal length was strange for what I'd like to use it for..

Although it's considered one of Fujifilm's finest and highest rated lenses (if not the highest), I was shocked to find it placed on clearance among some basic lenses like the 27 and 18 (just my opinion)..

So, I bought it for 40% less than it's original price..

The bokeh looks STUNNING.. The lens is SHARP and FAST!!!

I took it for a test out on the streets to see what I can get out it, and I can easily say that I have now found my favorite lens

Here are some results...

All taken with the X-T2...

Yes, a fast 90mm works very well on APSC

Nice shots, well done!

Thank you

It's a stunning lens..

It was a bit challenging for me at first, the focal length is quite strange for narrow areas, but you can manage it from a distance

The 90 is my favorite lens. The things it does to shadows and highlights on water in out of focus areas are so, so, beautiful.

It's a star attraction on X mount.

Re: 90mm Test Shots

Beautiful shots and thanks for sharing.

That said, on my MacBook Pro Retina the oof background in the first image has some unusual structure (repetitive horizontal patterns) that appears unnatural. Are you seeing this in the original or could this be something to do with JPEG compression or just the way the JPEG is rendered on my screen? What quality setting did you use for the JPEG when saving? I'm curious because this lens is on my list probably for my next purchase.

Thanks,

Bob

I captured a screen shot to hopefully show what I'm seeing.

It's one of those lenses that I should just put on my camera and start using more. It can be awkward from a framing perspective, but it's worth it to figure out ways around that.

Re: 90mm Test Shots

Exactly!!!

I was with a friend today doing some street photography..

He had a Nikon kit lens, while I had the 90..

It truly challenges you to think of a composition, look around you and just shoot from a distance...

Looks fine to me.  Nothing unusual.  Backgrounds always have unusual structures, with nearly every lens.  Depends on what is in the background.

I'm referring to below  which I also see in other areas of the frame.

Do you see the horizontal pattern in the oof background?

Not like the pattern in the crop section I just posted above which I see in several areas of the background. Please look at the crop section I just posted above and tell me if you see the horizontal pattern in the oof background area. If not, then it has to be something with how my MacBook is rendering the image.

Re: 90mm Test Shots

What I see appears to be oof striped pattern on some fabric around a persons shoulders. When viewing the image at 100% on my 30 inch 4K monitor I don't see any other artifacts elsewhere in the image.

Agreed. If there was animolication that the lens caused this pattern, I think he can rest easy on that. Lenses tint cause random unnnatural patterns in small patches of scenes.

Re: 90mm Test Shots

Is that what you are seeing. I can't see it myself but the pattern becomes apparent after some image filtering and it shows up in the FFT.

I would be surprised if the pattern was created by the lens.

Rawtherapee processing.

Part of the picture without the shirt and its FFT (ImageJ). The shirt itself has a pattern so I had to remove the shirt from the picture.

Yes, I see it.  But I would not draw any conclusion from that.  It depends on what is back there out of focus.  Lenses do weird stuff — I just accept it.
