Fuji 56 1.2

Hello all

For portraits, how often do you shoot wide open at 1.2?

Thanks in advance

I typically shoot at f2 with this lens for portraits. I usually want to ensure the subjects entire head is in focus and at f2 the background still has a nice pleasing oof rendering.

Re: Fuji 56 1.2

I personally do not like the look of portraits shot fully wide open on *any* lens because part of the fact is out of focus.

On this lens, I gravitate toward f/1.8 to f/2.2 for portraits. It provides a good balance of bookeh and getting a face fully in focus.

I sometimes can get what I want at f/1.4. I rarely use the full f/1.2, but when I need the wide apertures, it is great to have them.

As you'd expect with such a good portrait lens more than 50% of my shots with it are at 1.2.

You need to be careful with the focus - you can easily catch the tip of a nose or chin and leave the eyes soft; but with practice and care it's utterly brilliant

I'm pretty much at 1.2 all the time unless i'm doing really tight headshots.   The closer to the subject, the more I stop down, up to f4  for really tight headshots .

It's entirely relevant to distance to subject. If you are so close the head is filling the frame, then yes, 1.2 will render parts of tha face out of focus while others are in which is not usually desireable. But if they are backed off a bit so you get the whole torso and some background context, then 1.2 is fine if you nail the eyes.

Depends on the subject and angle.  In the case of many cat portraits, I think very thin DOF can work well, as in this example, shot wide open at f1.2.  I prefer the greater subject isolation you get, however, the angle of the head as well as what's in the background will dictate greater DOF with a smaller aperture at times.
