A m4/3 owner ready to buy the fuji s5 pro for playing around?

hello guys:) currently i own an olympus omd E-m10  with some nice lenses like 12-40 F2.8, 25mm F1.7 , 45mm F1.8 and 75mm F1.8. Olympus was my first dslr type camera and although with smaller sensor i am very happy in terms of quality especially with the nice lens. One guy here in my place he selling his old Fuji S5 pro with a 80-200 F3.5 nikon lens. The price is for both 250 euro and including the grip with the batteries. I make some research and if found that is 10 years old camera. i never had a fuji or nikon or canon or any other " big " dslr. I read that for portraits this camera is great. The price of this camera is very good too as i am thinking to buy it so i can play around with it. My question is it worth to buy such a camera also i can use it in portrait photography too. I am worry about  somethings i read like the camera is slow that the camera have 6mp sensor etc. what you think about this?

That's a good price so if you want to buy it and have fun, then go for it. I have an S3 and like it and the S5 is better, built like a Nikon D200.

The S5Pro was quite a camera in it's day, based on a Nikon D200 body (and compatible with Nikon lenses) but with a Fuji sensor. It was renowned for it's colour (as is the case with Fuji cameras today) and excellent dynamic range. It was a very popular camera for wedding photographers because of it's good dynamic range.

Yes, it was somewhat slower in operation than it's competitors, but otherwise it was a great camera to have and use. I have friends that are still using S5Pros to this day, and sometimes I regret getting rid of mine.

If the camera you're looking at is in very good condition, then it will be a fun camera to have.

It produces 12mp images since it's sensor is a 6+6mp sensor, mening that it has 6mp small sensors, combined with 6mp larger sensors that combines to give you a 12mp image. It used a very unique sensor which was designed for high dynamic range.

Some examples - click on them for a better view :

I still have mine...

Hello!

... and still like it a lot. The resolving power translates to roughly an 8MP output with the special chip design. It offers files with lots of quality though, great tonality, great dynamic range. Operating speed is ok, the camera itself is very responsive, but playback etc takes more time than modern cameras.

Btw, there is no 80-200/3.5 from Nikon.

Best,

Alex

Re: I still have mine...

Hello!

Only you can tell if it is worth it - I would not want that lens (3.5-5.6 btw). I do like to pair it with a Tamron 28-75/2.8 though.

The body is a really good one and offers a lot of compatibility for legacy lenses and accessories, for example for lens reversal macro (the full set of triggers etc):

For useabilty with the latest generation of lenses make sure to check the Nikon homepage.

If you can do without the money, the S5 offers small high quality files.

Best,

Alex

The S5Pro is a pure fun camera,  not for speed nor high resolution,  but for pure color.

Yes, it has a very strong AA filter and this camera likes really good glass, mainly sharp prime lenses.

Last time I checked there are no more repair parts for this camera.

If the camera is in such a good condition, then it will be a good buy in my opinion.

CHECK THE BATTERIES though, I'm not sure whether new batteries are still available for the S5, but I'm sure you'll be able to find generic replacements if needed.

The Sigma 17-50 is a very popular lens and should work just fine, I used the Nikon 18-105mm most of the time, but that has now been superceded by the Nikon 18-140mm as far as I know. However, you will be able to find many good lenses for this camera, just be wary of the newer AF-P lenses from Nikon, they might not be compatible.

I have also used the Nikon SB-600 flashes on my S5 and they worked great.

Thank you and 250 including a nikkon lens is not bad at all.  The camera come with hand grip and the 2 batteries . Also i just ordered a CF to Sd adapter that i can use an sd card.

i am willing to buy in the near future and one of the follwing lens or sigma 17-70 or 17-50 or tamron 17-50 just to be all around camera and i can use it and for potraits too. i dont want to invest too much about this camera because i already own a m/3 camera with good lenses.but i think for this price is worth to get and play:) is completely different that my mirroless. the buttons , is bigger , different menu , optical viewfinder, different lenses, so it will be interesting experience:) lets hope that i will enjoy using it:)

One of the 17-50 or 17-70 lenses should be a good match to the S5.

I agree that you should not invest too much as this is a fairly old camera, but I'm sure you will have lots of fun with it. It is VERY different from the m43 cameras (I have an OMD EM10 myself) and will take some time getting used to it, but once you are familiar with its operation I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the results that you can get!

Enjoy and post some images once you have it going!

Re: A m4/3 owner ready to buy the fuji s5 pro for playing around?

Be aware that your Helios lens is M42 mount and you won't be able to get infinity focus with it on the S5 pro unless you buy an adapter with an optical correction lens - basically a simple x1.1 teleconverter.  It will affect IQ (mostly by lowering contrast) but the good ones aren't too bad.  There are a lot of good legacy lenses - including Nikon MF lenses of course - but others such as Sigma's Super-wide II 24 f/2.8 are popular and cheap that you could use with either a plain adapter or a focal reducer.

I had that 28-200 3.5-5.6 lens (or another one like it, there were a couple of versions I think) that I used quite happily for a long time on my D700 as my "walkaround" lens.  The worst thing about it was heavy barrel distortion at the longer end, but Photoshop has the lens profile built in and it was easily fixed in PP.

I think you could be in for a lot of fun!

Hello!

I don't have a 10, only a 5.1, but the S5 feels more substantial for sure - give the lens layout, overall size can be comparable, weight will be quite a bit more:

100% crops

Hello!

To give you a first idea, here are two 100% crops with the S5 and Nikkor 50-135/2.5 vs EM5.1 and Minolta MD 50-135/3.5 on a Metabones Speedbooster (0,71) to kind of level out the view; both nice lenses, both 135mm, both f/5.6, both straight converted, no tweaking and sharpening. Just to give you an idea of detail. Both focussed on the round window:

I will do some more informative snpas for you tomorrow if you want and provide the RAWs, so that you can get an idea of of "processible" the S5 files are.

Best,

Alex

PS: I had to shoot the S5 at ISO 200 to avoid shake... unsteady hands today...

oh i have e-m10 too:) is amazing little camera:) and with the nice lens the results is amazing too:) i already received the fuji s5 today:) is very big camera:) now i understand how good is my em10 with the grip:) but as first meeting with this kind of dslr my thoughts are positive:) simple buttons all manuals not need to enter the screen , something different than my mirrorless. a something i have to use is that my m43 have live view so it helps me to see what to shoot. but with this camera i will learn more also it seems to have amazing power for revovery highlights and shadows:)  the shutter count is around 14000 and it seems that there is some dirt when i i am looking trough the viewfinder , must be sensor dirt and needs cleaning?:)
