Canon 200D SL2 and Tamron 16-300

Anybody else here having problems with this combo?

I bought the 200D last month but I can't use my Tamron 16-300 in Live View. It looks like there's a really bad CA in the screen and focusing does not work. The lens works fine on my 600D.

Hope you guys can share your experience.

Make sure you have the in-camera lens corrections turned off. They typically don't work with 3rd party lenses and can cause some anamolies.

and focusing does not work. The lens works fine on my 600D.

There is an incompatibility that showed up with the lastest generation of EOS bodies.  The lens firmware will need to be updated by Tamron service:

Thanks Lemming51. I think this could also be a factor.

I'm trying to get my lens updated through Tamron. It's a bit complicated for me though since I bought it in the Philippines and I'm currently here in the UAE. I'll update this post how things go.

EDIT: Just to add, I disabled CA correction in camera and that fixes the weird fringing problem for me. I can now use this combo on my next weekend trip!

Update: I already have the latest firmware on my Tamron 16-300 but the focus is still hit and miss. I hope Tamron develops a better firmware for this lens.

Another update: So apparently my lens was defective and it was not the firmware that needs work. I sent it back to Tamron PH and they repaired the autofocus mechanism. Autofocus now works great but the jumpy video when zooming in and out is still there. I'll send it back for repair. Shout out to, Tamron Japan! They have been very helpful in fixing my concern.

For (casual) video, IMHO there is nothing better than the Canon 18-135 STM lens.  AF is fast, silent, stable (esp with Canon's in-lens Dynamic IS), and smooooth.  Highly recommend checking it out.

No, the nano-USM version is better. Silent, vibration free, super fast autofocus. Made for live view and video recording

You’re right, I should have included the USM version too, as they both perform identically  when shooting video. The USM is preferred for stills though, with its faster AF.

Re: Canon 200D SL2 and Tamron 16-300

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm not really looking for a new lens, I just want my current 16-300mm to work as before. I use it in Air Shows but this year I noticed that the video "jumps", not just shakes, when I zoom in/out past the 100mm and 200mm mark (approx). That did not happen in the past so I'm sending it back for repair.

The Tamron 16-300mm is not the best for videos but I don't shoot videos that much so it's no big deal, plus I got the 24mm STM pancake.

Sounds like you have it nailed down.  Best of luck!

Re: Canon 200D SL2 and Tamron 16-300

I've got the 16-300 on my T5i/700D, and it won't focus at full zoom. Sometimes it jumps in and out quickly, but sometimes it just won't focus. (I don't do video.) I need to send it back for repair, I guess.

Re: Canon 200D SL2 and Tamron 16-300

You should have your lens firmware updated. That should be enough if there are no other problems with your lens.

Hey thanks.  Glad to know some of it's helping   .  Makes it all worthwhile!

I second this recommendation.  This lens, even on older Canon cameras is lightning quick for focus, silent and on the mark for focus.  I played a little with live view video and was pleased with the results.
