Is the XF 10-24 supreme - or no better than Nikon 10-24?

I start another question thread for the XF 10-24 to avoid cluttering up the XF 18-55 vs Sony 16-70 thread.

Anyway, I definitely need an UWA. The XF 10-24 has been tested by e g Ken Rockwell and Imaging Resources with stellar results. It seems everything is great and there is no distortion. Only negative seems to be price.

Now, the Nikon 10-24 also seems like a good choice. And the Sony 10-18 generally gets good reviews. Can anyone describe their experiences with either of these lenses?

The 10-24 would basically cover 80% of my photographic needs, with my NEX-6 and SEL55210 for detail shots but it is a stiff investment and I can get the Nikon plus a D3300 or D300S for the same money. Ok, an X-E2 would only add $400 or so.

Although I am a BIG fan of XF 10-24, it HAS distortion, and it is quite noticeable in the corners. Also, sharpness is not one of Fuji's best, again near the corners. I mainly use this lens for landscape but when I use it for candids or snapshotps I have to be VERY carefully about where I place the subject (people).

In my 500px profile you can find plenty of images taken with this lens.

I suggest you check out the reviews of both lenses at photozone.de a much better source than Ken Rockwell who is best ignored but that is another topic.

There is vingetting at corners -as photozone suggests. And it is corrected with ISO and in poor light that will destroy your image sometimes if there is a face forexample.

I have the Fuji 10-24 and really like it.  I use to shoot full frame Nikon and had the 16-35 and that was a TANK of a lens and I really liked it as well.

What is nice about the Fuji is the IS.  It is great for slow shutter speeds and shooting video hand held.

The Fuji outperforms the Nikon and you get autofocus. Used, they can be reasonable although too many sellers are unreasonable. You have to hunt for the good prices. And with the current sale, that lens is $899.

In APS-C, you can't beat Fuji lens performance. But since you already have Sony NEX6, why not look at a Sony? (10-18 for instance)

For UWA, remember that Fujifilm has officially announced an 8-16mm lens.  It’s going to be a “Red Badge” zoom, so...big, heavy, expensive.

Re: Is the XF 10-24 supreme - or no better than Nikon 10-24?

In my personal experience, the Fuji 10-24mm is:

• Better in build quality, IQ, and sharpness than the Sony 10-18mm

• Equal in build quality, IQ, and sharpness to the Nikon 10-24mm

• Better build quality, IQ, and sharpness than the Nikon 10-20mm

• Equal in build quality, IQ, and has better sharpness than the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5

• Equal in build quality, IQ, has better corner sharpness than the Sigma 10-24mm F4-5.6

• Equal in build quality, IQ , has better corner sharpness than the Tokina 11-26mm

• Less in build quality, same IQ, similar sharpness to the Canon 16-35mm F4L

I've used all the above lenses, either in Sony E mount, Canon EF mount or Nikon F mount.

Overall, the Fuji 10-24mm is a UWA, it has the same issues that all UWA lenses have (distortion, corner sharpness). It's focus is on versatility, function and overall usability. That being said, it's a strong performer, especially paired with the x-trans sensor. It's a very "fun" lens to have in your bag, I would say "get it" if you know UWA is what you want to shoot. I use it quite a bit for video on the XT-2 as well.

For WA, I personally prefer shooting with the Fuji 14mm and the Nikon 20mm F1.8G, but they may not be wide enough for your applications if you need UWA. I've also heard very good things about the Zeiss 12mm for Fuji X mount.

How do you compare two zooms with completely different FL's designed for different formats?

have got the Xf14mm which is much better than xf10-24

Please define "much better".  The two testing sites I rely on are Imaging Resource and Photozone. IR actually gives the 10~24 a slight sharpness advantage across the frame at 14mm and PZ shows the two very much a toss up with the exception of distortion where the prime wins but then the zoom wins on light falloff which I'll admit is unusual.

Will be buying the xf16mm and selling xf10-24. will get the 8-16 when it is released instead.

Have you considered that possibly you have a less than optimal sample of the 10-24?

not a favouite unfortunately

The Fuji 10-24 is, in my experience, a class leading lens all things considered and I much prefer using it to my Canon 10~22 on my 7D.

I own 14 2.8 and 10-24.
My version of 14 2.8 is only better than 10-24 concerning distortion. I won't bet
which one is better in sharpness.
My version of 10-24 is an excellent versatile uwa zoom from 10-18mm.

Yes exactly. Although on my copy IQ drops of at 22mm, not 18. I prefer the 10-24 over the 18-55 and even the 16-55 up to about 22mm or so. But I still shoot with the 10-24 all the way to 24 mm, unless I really think I have a cracker of a shot from a composition & lighting perspective, in which case the 16-55 goes on for 22mm+.

And, to the OP, if you go Fuji then just get the 10-24.  You will not regret it.
