Must be interesting to watch the show, always wondered how this actually pans out when you are there??

For me - and this is possibly a personal thing - the white balance is way off. If you could provide the RAW for the last image I woul dbe very keen to have a play with it??

Thanks Deed. I use long exposures (30sec) so the real thing might not be that much dramatic but always nice to watch. Reg. WB I used awb and adjusted some in post to get that very nice greens in the Lights. So your observation was a good one.

Comment on post-processing...  if your desire was to bring out the greens of the lights there are other ways to do that besides changing the WB.  I'd be interested to see what you would get if you set the WB to something proper for a normal night sky shot and then brought out the greens by using something like the HSL panel to bring out the greens.

Hmmm.   Seems to me there's blue in the sky that isn't obscured by the aurora or yellow-ish light pollution evidence. . . it doesn't look so wrong to me.

Very nice work, Edorf.

Thanks Mike! No expert in LR so will give that a go. Never used HSL. Guess I could use masking of only the Lights to.

WB is a little tricky in such shots so its a little trial & error. You are absolutely right reg light pollution as there is a major city (Trondheim) and a smaller one in that direction. The verical shot was in a northern and different direction.

I saw my first northern lights in Finland this March. It really is an extraordinary experience. The best moments were when it was quickly moving across the sky. Even with relatively short exposures (4 to 10 sec) you cannot really freeze that. No idea whether video could do that. Or timelapse, Or set the camera on interval shooting and enjoy the show.

I'd be interested to know what the Temp and Tint values were, both as captured and as processed. Mine were mostly around 4900K, tint +10

In your last shot there is light area at middle height, about a third from the left that I think should not be green? There is a risk here in overprocessing. Not saying yours are, but I've seen shots that were IMO enhanced to much.

I'll keep it simple and sweet,  WB is a bit off and they are too underexposed and not in a 'stylisitc' manner to show off the greens, just way underexposed.

You shot RAW though, so should have no problem lifting them a bit and getting better WB.

Cheers.

Hi Robert. I think temp was around 4200+/- and tint around 40-50. Can check when back on pc.

The greens you see is grass on meadows. Farmer area. 😊

Lovely shots. I'd love to see that myself.

I'd also agree that white balance is a tad off and the colour balance has been thrown off a bit because of that.

For what its worth I find night sky at my dark site (no auroras) works well at about 3900 and tint 0. But then I haven't imaged auroras although I do often get green airglow.

The green in your image seems too grass green compared to the many other green aurora shots I have seen.

Nice pictures, but a few words of advice:

I used to live in Mo i Rana, which is near the Arctic circle in Norway. There I took aurora pictures on film, using Fuji 400 negative film. It was never as green as in your pictures, as it was winter there was snow on the ground so any tint is instantly noticeable. Next time you take aurora pictures set the white balance manually at daylight (5600K) and RAW + JPEG, with the film simulation at Provia (normal). Take at least some pictures at these settings. Don't be afraid to use a high ISO. sometimes the aurora is not simply a green curtain or veil. I have seen (but not photographed) orange and red aurora, a correct white balance would be crucial then.

You feel like providing a RAW file?? maybe one that you don't feel too precious about?? Would be a great opportunity for those who "saw" the image differently.

I think the Fui's choose a lower color temp fpr Daylight, generally about 4900. There is also an 'artistic' element: people expect cold, and not warmish light. The OP also hs to deal with light polution on the clouds
