A99II above ISO 6400

I always have the fear of going above ISO 6400 when shooting with A99II. Is my fear warranted? Is it ok to go above ISO 6400 instead of suppressing the exposure speed to get a lower ISO?

ISO 16,000 with the 300/2.8 HS wide open.

ISO 20,000 - same lens, wide open.

ISO 12,800 - same

Nothing to do with this thread but this shot caught my attention. It's probably because of the high contrast / shallow DOF provided by the lens in combination with the already dropping DR of the sensor at this ISO which gave the shot a look similar to the "Miniature" style. Seriously I had to look two times because at first glance it looked as if  those were playmobil toy figures.

And then again it might be that the guy at left is about 5'2". He plays a lot bigger than that though!

Can't you perform your owns tests and decide? We all have different opinions about what is acceptable or unacceptable.

Good point. A few test shots would answer his question.

This is true... The tbcass pic above, the first thing I noticed was the noise, very distracting BUT it's still pretty darn good, I was impressed with how little there was.

I never go above 1600 on my A99 as the noise gets two distracting and my ability to remove it in PP seems ... lacking.  Before that I never went above 800 on my old Nikon D300 for the same reason.

I was hoping 3200 on the A99ii but it looks like 6400 might be great as well, whih his impressive to me and then only above that does does it start to get iffy, depending on your own noise tolerance of course.

I might wait another year or two and try and grab a cheaper used 99ii

I'll take some noise over too much detail reducing noise reduction any day.

Remember that when viewed at 100% a 42mp image is hugely magnified and noise is magnified as well. Here's the same image reduced to 8 MP. Do you see much noise now?

Here's resized to 24mp.

Great shots there Gary....how are you processing your shots and what noise reduction are you using? Are you also using compressed or uncompressed RAW files?

cheers

Re: Theatre shots

From my experience with the A99ii that type of high iso performance is possible with JPEG's with noise reduction set to low to retain detail.
