Good news on 3d projectors

While 3D-TVs are dead, 3d projectors are still produced, and many generic-brand models do support shutter-glasses.

I'm glad to inform you that I just discovered how to obtain usable 3D images from the one I have.

My projector is Nierbo MAX 500; sold under different names at different prices; B&H sells it as "Avinair" for unthinkable 1400$.

The spec says the native resolution is 1280x800; in reality it's 1280x768, at least when connected by HDMI. And the projector is able to obtain full-HD (1920x1080) through HDMI and downsize.

If you try to watch half-side-by-side stereopairs at 1280x768, the quality is just bad.

The official way to increase 3D resolution is to supply page-flipping input where full 1280x768 left- and right images are interleaved. But this requires appropriate (NVIDIA only?) display card or 3D-bluetooth player.

Then I tried to supply 1920x1080 to the projector - just out of curiosity. The fonts look ugly, I would not use it for day-to-day work... But when switched into 3D mode with half-side-by-side stereopair on the screen, the things suddenly change. The quality is similar to what I get with page-flipping, on par with full-hd 3DTV supplied with the same kind of input image format.

Apparently the projector makes good use of extra resolution when extracting left/right pictures.

Haven't I made your day ?

Oleg.

I agree, projectors are the way to go. I bought the Xgimi H1 and am amazed by video quality (1080p) and it is excellent for .mpo files. LED too so no delicate and expensive bulbs and something like 5 year lifespan. Also less heat so not much fan noise.

I've been wondering about this and how you go about "sending" 3D images to the projector. Also, what 3D glasses do you use for viewing?

Re: Good news on 3d projectors

The Xgimi is rather like a smart TV that projects rather than displays. It has a built in player which recognises most 3D formats for video and stills including  .mpo and  you can of course input from an external player (PC or PS3) via HDMI.

It uses standard DLP shutter glasses operating at 144Hz so no flicker (to me anyway) and no more light loss than my LG TV.

Watching 3D on a 120" screen is just amazing.

I am not saying that this model is any better than than any other 3D projector but it does have Smart capabilities and its own processor and graphics abilities. It runs Android so navigates just like a smartphone.

By the way I have no connection with this company in any way - just a happy customer !

P.S. - I forgot to mention that you would input your 3D stills or video from a USB stick or drive to use the internal player.

Thanks, Robert, that’s very helpful. All I need now (as ever) is some spare cash!

Re: Good news on 3d projectors

I connect a Windows PC (desktop, laptop or tablet) through HDMI.

Yesterday I discovered that software choice or configuration is important too - on one computer I was able to use Stereophotomaker, while on another it gave low resolution. In the latter case I resorted to Irfanview (plain viewer) with pre-built half-above-below images at 1920x1080, and it worked.

Regarding the glasses, "KX-30" work fine, the even cheaper GT-?16? (forgot the number) - are to be avoided.

Thanks for the info, Oleg.

There are so many different ones available it’s good to hear from people who actually have them.

Re: Good news on 3d projectors

Which stereo formats will the Xgimi H1 understand?

Can it show 1920x1080 pixels per each eye? If yes, how you should supply the input to obtain this resolution?

Re: Good news on 3d projectors

It recognises Bluray 3D, Over&under, Left&Right and .mpo for stills.

You can input from USB - it has USB 2.0 and 3.0 and HDMI.

Any unsupported format can be played in from your PC/Laptop using a stereo player of your choice.

Re: Good news on 3d projectors

So, when you watch a stereopair from a USB disk, what is the maximum resolution?

E.g. does it show 1920x1080 per an eye natively?

Re: Good news on 3d projectors

To be honest, I found that $1400 is quite much for a projector, for home use, and there are cheaper options, such as Optoma HD142X 1080p 3000 under $500 and with the same functions as model described above! The whole review is quite representative and informative!

Re: Good news on 3d projectors

I agree. I recently got a 3d projector for my teachings and they are quite good.
