New G7 or 2nd hand EM5 mkii

Hey!

So I've got a budget of around 600USD and I'm looking for a micro 4/3 camera that will do both stills and video. Can't afford the gh so it's down to these 2.

G7 has 4k, great video, but only 2-axis IS.

em5 ii has ok video, but great IS. Also bigger price tag.

Is the IS worth going for a 2nd hand em5 ii over the G7? Cause I'm coming from an EPL6 which has 3-axis stabilisation, which was only good enough after software stabilisation (which crops the image).

ORRR should I wait for em5 mk3 to come out and then get a cheaper mk2?

Thanks

you might try for a deal on a G85 (successor to G7). perhaps body only. A little beyond your $600 but you'd be on the latest model vs one behind.

Same great ergonomics, two top dials, Better IS, weather sealing. No AA filter so "better resolution" (same megapixels)

Can I support this, based on UK prices it is only a little more and is so good.

As far as I know, G7 doesn't have IBIS, or if you like it better it has 0 axis IBIS 😀

As regards your question, if you do value video, I would stretch your budget and choose the G85.

Cheers.

The G80/85 is significantly superior to the G7. I had the G7 & sold it, I now have the G80

A good trick is to get the G85 kit and sell the 12-60 for around $200-$270 on eBay.

We have a G7 and G85 (G80) in our house. For video the G7 is great, but it lacks any kind of IS. If you have a lens with IS then I would still get the G7. It's less expensive than the em5-ii and better at video.

There is also the Gx85, rangerfinder style Panasonic body with image stabilization and 4k video.

If you haven't tried either in hand yet, I would do that first. I tried both in the EM5ii and loved the G85's grip, which is basically the same as the G7.  Quality wise, you'll get pretty similar photo from both and better video from the G7.

Re: New G7 or 2nd hand EM5 mkii

i'll second the many replies, and suggest, find a way and step up the budget for g85/80. I got a used g6 last year (which I did like) though I really wanted a g7, but couldn't justify at that time. just got a g85 and have to say, so happy with it in every regard, I personally haven't noticed the miniscule improvement in iq due to dropping the aa filter. but the ergonomics are just so outstanding (and I did like the g6 controls). so can't truly compare to the g7 personally, but can attest to how great the g85 is. and if they have the kit deal, get it. I'm keeping the 12-60 and find it a very nice lens (it was 1199cdn vs 1299cdn with kit (like 75usd more).

good luck with whatever you decide, compared to the old days, there's no 'bad' cameras

Welcome to the club!

And the 12-60 is an amazing lens, and the Dual IS2 is almost voodoo magic!
