NX500 plus video solution
2

For some time I've been looking for a decent, compact photo and video camera solution, and while the nx500 is brilliant for photos, it falls short (in my opinion) for video, at least if you want to keep things fairly compact.

Firstly, there's only one compact lens that has OIS (PZ 16-50) and while this is fairly good, I'd prefer to use either the 30mm or 45mm for stills, and both of these are not great for video - the 30mm has poor autofocus for video and no ois and the 45mm has no OIS.

What's more, the 4k crop in my experience isn't that great, although 1080p footage is very decent. However, in order to stabilise it in post you have to sacrifice yet more resolution.

So, my solution when I have to travel light is to still use the nx500 for photos but use the sony fdr-x3000 for video. I've even found a way to attach the fdr-x3000 to the nx500 for times when I may want to take photos and shoot video at the same time!

Or you can just use a 16-50S, that's only 2-3 inches longer than the 45mm, and have one of the best all in one hybrid solutions around.

I get that the 16-50S isn't a compact lens. But the OPs solution seems much more cumbersome to me.

If I were truly worried about staying compact, above all else, then I'd go m43. Or I'd go NX500 with the 45mm and live without OIS. No OIS is a fair tradeoff to not have to carry around a FrankenCamera.

If it's REALLY an issue, just rock the 16-50PZ and carry a 45mm in your pocket.

The 16-50s isn't a compact lens. That's an understatement! It's massive! Not only is it much longer and wider but it weighs a lot more too (more  5 times as much!) The nx500 plus 45mm is compact, the nx500 plus 16-50s isn't, it really isn't! It wouldn't be practical carrying it around on my waist or even in a small case. Well, it wouldn't even fit in a small case.

Unfortunately, no ois in the 45mm for video is a big problem. I'd need to stabilise the footage in post; if I shot in 4k I'd have the additional crop to worry about not being able to get everything in the frame, if I shot in 1080p I'd have to sacrifice even more resolution to get the footage stabilised.

Sure I can put the 16-50pz in my pocket but it'd be a pain to have to keep changing lenses. I think my idea about having the fdr-x3000 with me is a decent one. I don't have to attach it to the camera and could easily stow it in any pocket and start shooting quickly. I thought having it attached to the camera would be great for times when I may want to shoot video and take photos at the same time, which I reckon would be useful for the type of shooting I do. It's also easy enough to keep the adapter in my camera bag or pocket. It would require a few seconds to get it set up, but again it's not something I'd have to do - it's purely optional and not at the expense of space etc.

There is a Sima SL-100LX in there, but it is much too bright, so I put a starbucks cup with lid on there, works pretty well if you are close to the subject.
