Aussies - E-P5 again

Why get a new "improved" crippled camera? Why not get an old favourite?

Just noticed that in Oz I see the E-P5 offered again http://www.digidirect.com.au/cameras/cscmirrorless_cameras/olympus_pen_e-p5_body_-_black at Oz$499 for the body which is about US$402 and that includes our 10% tax.

If I didn't have two E-P5 already I think I would be buying one.

Regards........ Guy

What about the rest of us? : )

I agree that there are serious bargains to be had in the not-so-old camera market. A like-new E-M10 arrived today for a mere $330. Even had current firmware. It'll be a fine upgrade for the former E-PL1 owner in my life.

I assume you were referring to the new E-M10 III being just "improved".  I agree but there is something that may be interesting in one of the few upgraded features. Robin Wong said the 5-axis IBIS has been noticeably improved, over its predecessor and presumably also the E-P5.  Other than that, I do agree the older camera is a great value and a better buy.

Yes, a touch dismayed at how they have progressively dumbed down later releases and particularly the E-M10iii.

As for the E-P5 five axis stabilisation, then I am happy, can't see that I need more than it provides. Silly slow shutter speeds usually result in buckets of subject movement, and that's no fun if you didn't want it.

I solved the subject movement problem with IBIS and slow shutter speeds: I no longer photograph anything but brick walls, park benches, and cemetery headstones. Those tend to stay in place long enough for a sharp image.

Speaking of subject movement, are you heading north soon?

I'm with you Guy (as you know!) Very underrated little camera. Especially at that price. Do yourself a favour.

Hi

Does the E-P5 have any advantage over the original EM10? I thought the spec was very similar and that the EM10 was the clear winner because of the VF. I have had both BTW.

Tks

It's different for me as I am a screen only user, a rare breed.

As for E-M10 vs E-P5 then the E-P5 has better stabilisation and the 1/8000 sec shutter.

In the case of the E-M10 then it has the later TruePic VII chip which delivers Live Composite. And of course a viewfinder.

Some abbreviated specs on my timeline page.... http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/80-Oly-timeline.html

The OM-D hump makes it a non-fitter in my usual camera bags so not interested for that and other reasons. I like the position of the controls on the E-P5, seems natural to me, the E-M10 had a silly position for the on/off switch.

The chart on the E-M10 review breaks much of it down:

Very close, but there are differences to consider. I just cross shopped those two, and for the intended user, the E-M10 was the right choice for the wifi, EVF, and video. OTOH, the E-P5 has some advantages, too.

My first observation. What a dumb flaw!

Greetings, Guy!

I am aware of you and other E-P5 owners through your posts and smile with recognition of others enjoying the E-P5 experience. I have the silver/black model with its retro look that reminds me of my SLR film cameras. I enjoy its size and features such as having the front and back control wheels with the two position switch that extends the control capability. The E-P5 has that special quality that makes me want to use it.

I admit my fascination with the latest Pen but more time and scrutiny is needed before I would consider it a camera that I would trust. Even if I end up with the Pen-F, I don't see any scenario where I don't have the E-P5 also. The Pen-F's fully articulating LCD would be useful in some circumstances such a video but for many circumstances like bending from a seated position to capture a photo, the tilt screen is so much easier.

Cheers!

Jim

Yes, it's just a nice camera to use. They got everything right (for me) at that point in the technology game. I'll stay with that for a long time to come.

The Pen-F and E-M1ii and now the E-M10iii have increasingly gone backwards in usability in my mind. It's the MySets mainly that I talk of as they are the basis of nearly all my shooting.

Tilt screen for me as a screen only user, it just works fine. The flippy out sideways thing leaves me totally cold.

Re: Aussies - E-P5 again

Thanks for posting Guy.

I picked up an Em5m2 for 800+ earlier this year when eBay was having 20% off sales and later a store had a flash sale and the em1m2 was about 2100+ plus Oly included a fast 32gb card so I'm all cameraed up at the moment. That P5 seems really cheap for what was their high end camera at one point.

Thanks for the photos!

The black E-P5 looks great too! I had originally planned to pick up the black E-P5 as a backup but got the E-M10ii for my wife instead.

I am behind in tracking the newer cameras but read/watched all I could on the Pen-F and didn't remember anything about messing with MySets (of course, the operative word is remember :-)).

It's probably just as well that I admire the Pen-F from afar while continuing to enjoy what I have.

Beautiful cameras, best look ever from Olympus. I don't know why people think the PEN-F is better.

As for the flippy screen, I didn't think I would like it on the PEN-F, but it's quite handy.

Shuttered up the home and made it to Orlando Wed afternoon. I have a flight out to Colorado from Orlando on Saturday morning. Airport is shutting down 5:30 pm Saturday evening in advance of the hurricane. Effects of Irma are supposed to start in Orlando mid-day Sunday. My summer in Florida is over. Time to climb mountains again.

Guy - your photo of your friends seems to show some numbers on the mode dial round from the PASM settings I am familiar with - what do they do?

Smart. I'm guessing you'll make it back in time for the aspens to turn, too. Good luck!
