Epson Scan: how to use a custom scanner profile? (Windows 10)
1

I'm using Epson Scan software and I've just made a custom icc profile which I want to select as source icc profile. The icc file is located in Windows -> System32 -> spool -> drivers -> color
However, when in Epson Scan I go to Configuration -> Color Settings and choose ICM, I can only choose EPSON Standard as a source profile. Also, the drop down menu for Target profiles only shows a very limited amount of settings.
How come I don't get to choose all color profiles available? Does Epson Scan store its profiles in a different location than the default?

You might take a look under Windows Color Management. I checked on my Win 7 Pro machine and in the drop down the Epson Scanner is listed. When selected NO profiles are listed. There is an add button so you might be able to add your custom profile there.Just remember whatever you put in there effects all programs.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the tip.
I've already been there but maybe because it's a printer/scanner device it's only listed as a printer there.
Just wondering if anyone else has succeeded with Epson Scan.

Because it's a printer/scanner I doubt any other profile will work. I've got one for the home and they're great, I don't think color accuracy was a priority. On my flat bed Epson I use Vuescan software and profiles can be used. Good Luck.

I have an Epson v850 (running on Win10/64bit) that came bundled with X-Rite iProfile software.  The included instructions indicated that Epson Scan only supports ICC Profile Version 2 and not to use other versions.

I tried to use a profile in ICC version 4 but it wouldn't recognize it.  The ICC Version 2 works fine though  Hope this helps.

I'm happy to report that Carpe PM's suggestion to this vexing problem worked for me. Creating a V2 scanner profile made the profile readily available to me in the ICM drop-down menu for the source profile after, of course, right clicking on the newly created profile and selecting "Install Profile."

Thank you, Carpe PM. - R

I got the V850 Pro scanner with the Silverfast software and the i1 Scanner profiler from Xrite. I peoperly made the profiles using the targets supplied and then opened the reflective target file in Photoshop assigning it to the Xrite profile and printing it using my already profiled printer. Then I assigned the Epson profile and printed it, and finally I assigned no particular profile but my standard Adobe RGB default. Sadly, for all that effort, the default Adobe RGB profile worked better than the custom profiles so I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Have I missed something?

Depends on what you are trying to achieve. I have a V850 as well and the default Adobe RGB scans are reasonably good. But they aren't a match.

If what you are trying to achieve is a visually "perfect match" then you have to ask match what? Matching something you scan to something appearing on a monitor is problematic at best. OTOH,, if you scan, for instance, a 4x6" photo then print it as a 4x6" print, how closely do you wish them to match under the same light? That's when you need to ICC profile the scanner. But even there it isn't simple. The profile needs to be made with the same technology as the photo you scan. The V850 has pretty large differences in how it scans certain colors, especially orange and blue/violet that were made with Kodak chemistry or inkjet (CYMK) dyes. I've seen differences of deltaE as large as 10. But if the scanner profile is made with the same technology as the scanned object I've reduced deltaE errors to under 1 on average. This is overkill for most casual scanning purposes but becomes important in certain uses like reproduction / archival.
