EM1 mk2 HI-RES without tripod
4

Recently I went to home town to visit family and was tempted to use the Hi-RES mode eventhoogh I didn't bring a tripod.

Instead I tried to place the camera on a firm and steady surface like a bench, wall, railing etc. and use the 2 second trigger delay.

This enabled me to shoot at ISO 64 giving great detail and very clean photos.

The places I shot where quite crowded and it was a bit windy.

So a lot of the people on the shots are very ghost-like and some subjects like branches show movement. But I don't mind this as long as the effect are relatively minor.

The results were very promising (only 3 third I actually tried to use HI-RES), so I  the future I will start using this more often and start  carrying   the tripod in the trunk of car on a regular basis.

This leads to some qustions:

Which lenses are best for using HI-RES ? Can old four-thirds lenses be used ?

How to process in Lightroom / any recommended user preset available ?

Here is a link to some of the shots

In hindsigt I should have used apertures between F:4 and F:8 instead of resorting to F:2 when light was difficult.

Re: EM1 mk2 HI-RES without tripod

Nice shots! They are very "punchy". How did you process them?

Congrats for using HiRes. It is a feature that can really lift a shot.

Oly limits HiRes to a minimum aperture of f8 due to diffraction so that gives a clue of the demands. I would say the "ordinary" non Pro zooms would be struggling for resolution in HiRes but all the other lenses a stop or two (somwtimes 3) from maximum aperture (the Premium primes probably 3 stops) should have enough resolution. The 12-100 Pro probably one stop down. Ideally check out reviews for the sharpest tested aperture and use that.

My 75mm f1.8 is quite stunning in HiRes at f4 to 5.6 with just a table top and self timer delay. Problem is processing it. I usually just try and get the JPG right.

A table or rock etc. padded with a tightly packed item of clothing I find is better than an average tripod which must be vibrating a bit. I will never carry a heavy duty tripod so well done for your improvising!

Nice photos. Thank you for sharing.

I have done this as well, although my photo subjects have not been as interesting. I wanted to know if the high res functionality could be used without a tripod. It worked well if the camera was held firmly on a flat surface but not as well when I tried to do it hand-held.

Re: EM1 mk2 HI-RES without tripod

Hey,

Here are a few quick notes before I stop procrastinating and get to work.

Four thirds lenses can be used. I use my 35mm f3.5 macro and 50mm f2 macro for a lot of my HR work.

You can also use manual focus primes with an aperture ring if you want to stop down beyond f8.

Now while there isn't a huge amount of resolution to be gained at F22 due to diffraction, f11 does have some and you still get the benefit of lower noise (and therefore higher DR) once processed and scaled to around 24mp.

People keep talking about the most sturdy tripods. I bring a mid range gorilla pod which I have gripped onto light posts, placed on walls or fences etc and it works just fine with a prime lens.

The better lenses for this are definitely the primes for the system. The 40-150 pro lens is very good from wide open. The 12-40 is reasonable in the central 2/3 for HR. However all of them benefit from the added resolution.

I have used my 40-150 f/4-5.6 R and gotten some very good photos in high res. I am sure that the primes are better, but I can not complain about the quality of the photos just using some inexpensive zooms.

Your post does raise a question for me. I have one of the basic "dumb" adapters that allows me to use my Canon lenses on my E-M1.2 as manual lenses. I do not do this often for a variety of reasons, one being that I have little need for those focal lengths, but I have not tried to do high res images using this setup. Could this setup be used in high res? There is no communications between the camera and the lens so will the Oly allow me to take a high res image?

Re: EM1 mk2 HI-RES without tripod

I don't always use a tripod with high-res. I just balance on a rail, bench, suitable surface with 2-second delay.  When I do carry a tripod it is the little ultrapod (mine is 10 years old now).  Works wonderfully except in moderate to high wind and with long heavy lenses.

https://www.industrialrev.com/pedco/tripods/ultrapod-grip-tripod-p--upgrip?returnurl=%2fpedco%2ftripods%2f

One thing I have had trouble with is ISO 64 high-res shots and really blowing highlights.  I'm careful to avoid strong highlights when shooting regular shots ISO 64 but high-res at ISO 64 really kills the sky in some shots.  ISO200 is virtually perfect exposure every time and I find the shadows very clean with high-res.

Like others, I don't hesitate to use my legacy 4/3 glass with high-res.  Specifically the 50mm f/2 and 14-35 SHG.

Re: EM1 mk2 HI-RES without tripod

All lenses would be better... Some by leaps and bounds, some less.

You could certainly use the Canon lenses. If you can stop down that helps the resolution gain, especially f4/5.6 so give it a try!

Thank you all for your good response ( and pardon my spelling: English is not my first language and the auto corretion on this Laptip is awfull!).

Your responses confirms mybelief that HI-RES mode is actually veryu sefull, provided you stop down 2-4 stops and expose carefully.

Regarding processing:

I use Lightroonm CC and user presets from Tony Ventouri's webste

(http://unlockingolympus.com) as a starting point.

But I usually reduce  contrast, clarity, & sharpening plus add a little vibrance .

My impressions and plans.

ISO:

64 can be used with careful exposure, I also struggled a lot with blown highlights.

200 seems to be the best and ISO 1600 is less impressive.

Shooting technique:

I use the 2 second delay and touch screen to focus and release shutter. The screen is very sensitive and this seems to reduce vibrations.

The flip-out screen is also a big help, espcially in a cramped space, where it can be flipped to face forward and help focusing.

Lenses:

I want to use these (in no particular order):

8 MM F:3.5 foor-thirds, 11-22 mm F:2.8-4 3.5 four-thirds, 12 mm F:2 M43, 45 + 75 mm F:1.8 M43 , 60 mm F:2.8 M43 and 35-100 mm F:2 Foor-thirds

Seems I need to stop down to at F4 to F8 for best resolution.

Tripod

I will test using my sturdy Manfrotto tripod and also get a Gorilla pod,it is a good thing the the OMD camera are relatively light.

Yes, you can use hi-res mode with any lens, including completely manual legacy lenses.

Hello Glassoholic (cool name by the way).

I am not THAT serious about photogtraphy, it is just one of several hobbies, and I usually share photos  with family and friends by using WeTransfer.

But I have a FLICKR account, which I occassionally update. Next planned major update is end of February after my planned safari trip to Masai Mara.
