So my DP2X arrived aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnd.........

.........It's not a DP2X, it's a DP2. So initially I was a bit miffed, a DP2X was what was advertised, so that's what I expected. So I thought what the hell, lets see what's different. So when I fired it up I was greeted with the familiar sound of the arthritic lens fighting it's way out of the camera body. Focusing appeared to be the usual complaining but glacial experience I remembered, but definitely slower. I took a few pictures and checked them out in SPP v3.5.2 and 6, nice, the files look how I remember them. Then I read an old blog piece which reminded me to update the firmware. I checked and it had never been updated from V1.0. So I duly installed V1.05 and focusing is definitely improved, it still complains like it's about die, it just does it more quickly. So I took some high ISO shots and converted to mono in SPP 3.5.2, and was pleasantly surprised, no banding and it has a nice film like grain, definitely usable for certain shots, and ISO 1600 is just useable period. So I think I'll keep it, and put it down to a bit of good fortune rather than look at the glass half empty, it's funny how some things turn out.

If you bought from Ebay it should be protected by them.
You can definitely ask for refund or return through them, if you want to.

Yes I'm very familiar with how it all works, but there really isn't much difference between the two, and one I like the DP2 just happens to have so I'm fine with it, I got it for a good price anyway. They're not very cheap at the moment for some reason.

The original DP2 doesn't have a variable Analog Front End (with its associated issues that Sigma still can't get right in the Quattros), so I'd rate it higher than the X as long as you appreciate its cyan-happy personality.

Well the 2x had a Magenta-happy personality so I'll just have to adapt I guess.

If the DP2 irritates you enough, maybe a DP2s? - mine hasn't shown me any color casts yet and it has Quick Set button and an almost sane button layout.

I'll give it a go first, in my experience all of these foveon compacts are slightly different in subtle ways, even when it comes to colour.

The advantage over dp2x is that it does not have AFE. The disadvantage is that it is less sharp. But it is a really nice camera! I have both dp2 and dp2s and are not going to sell them.

DP2 and DP2s are the same execpt from the latter is better at power saving. There are no casts in the dp2 series.

Does a custom white balance fix that, like it did in the SD14?

My old DP2X definitely had a magenta cast, as has been reported elsewhere

I'll find out soon, at least on the DP2, if it has a cast.

I've done some test shots, it doesn't look any less sharp to me, at least not in raw.

I do not have a dp2x so I can only go by the blog I posted earlier.

But the dp2 has a nice organic feel to it when compared to dp2 merrill.

And yes it is sharp but don't put sharpness below 0 in SPP. 0.3 is what I usually use.

I tend to leave sharpening at default and sharpen later in Capture 1, it has an excellent sharpening tool.
