Ha ha!

That's probably a reference to how difficult it is to find Pentax in most camera shops - so we have to buy Pentax 'digital cameras off the internet'!

R

BTW, did anyone at Pentax own up to conceiving the '*ist D' name blunder? (nice camera though).

But, in the description of the Pentax Forum, it still goes, "... such as the K and *ist D series."

I mean, c'mon?! How many years it's been since *ist D, and how many DSLR models since? And Nikon's forum has yet-unreleased camera name in it!

The Pentax base is not big enough to segment into smaller sub-units, or to to be overly specific. Are you finding there to be too much traffic to follow?

Doug

I don't think that the OP is suggesting segmentation into smaller sub-units, just that we should include the names of current or recent cameras.

Seems like a good idea, and makes sense to me.

The OP was about the forum name(s), not post titles. Do we include all models or only recent models in this forum?  I see enough posts about older models that we should not to be exclusive.  And if we exclude older models then where to they go, except marginalized "other" forums.

Main point... I still do not see see the point given that the traffic here is not overwhelming, in fact some would say underwhelming.  Changing the name to only include recent models will not increase traffic.

There is a separate Pentax Compact Camera talk forum with a front page turn over rate of about 5 months.  Glacial compared to this forum.  I'd change this forum to similar to Nikon conventions and rename the compact forum to 'mirrorless'.  Pentax mirrorless (Q cameras) is what they mention most there it seems and the K-01 should go there as well as any new mirror less in the future.

strongly about it, instead of whinging here do something proactive instead and use this feature dpr has given us https://www.dpreview.com/forums/5001

That's what its for.

My view is it wont make any difference to pentax sales as ricoh doesn`t make them easily available . At least here in my part of the uk.

All pentax currently available are all "K" series anyway so the description is current . Only 3 apsc and 1 full frame current. That's not worth splitting a forum for .

I never read it before, now I did. It says: "such as the *istD and K series". That covers it perfectly even if the text is more than 10 years old. Nothing wrong with pictures from *istD's, they can be surprisingly good by today's or whatever standards. And it's mentioned as an example only. I really see absolutely no point here.

I admit, I hang out a lot in the Pentax forum even though I don't own a Pentax because there are some interesting discussions here.

That is why you don't care.

But this thread baffles me.

Because, as you wrote, you don't use Pentax anymore.

I only stated that in names of other forums reflect latest cameras, why can't Pentax SLR forum reflect in descriptor at least few more modern cameras than the ist*D?

I don't care because I have an actual life outside of photography forums.  I could care less what models are, or are not listed in a photography forum description.  If this bothers you so much, I suggest you re-evaluate your life's priorities.  You'll be much happier in the long run

Actually, I have change my mind. If the Pentax forum was separated by film, apsc and full frame, etc. , I believe that I would miss the array of different photographers chiming in their viewpoints coming from their worlds. I would miss that and that is why the Pentax forum so unique, unique because of Pentax's storied history and bright future going forward . Anyway, that is my take.

I still use a Pentax ist DS . . .

It may be old, but it still works, and IMHO still bangs out great pictures!

Take care & Happy Shooting!

I still use my ist D.

6MP of fun pictures of the family, kept all my FA lenses too.  Every now and then I pull it off the shelf and it will only blink a low battery alert on the lcd, even with new batteries, but 1st time it happened I found that flashing the 1.12 firmware to it again would fix it for a few more years. Other than that nuisance the ist D still works like the day I bought it.

I've actually got mine right beside me. I was getting it ready to take camping this month.

I actually bought one of the WiFi SD Card adapters that let you transfer pictures from the micro SD card to your phone via. WiFi.

I tried it out in my Pentax ist DS and . . . it worked even better than I had thought / hoped.

It is totally weird transferring pictures via. WiFi to your phone on a 16? year old camera. LOL.

It totally makes this camera a different beast!

6MP of fun pictures of the family, kept all my FA lenses too.

I've actually only have 1 AF lens for Pentax-K mount now.

I keep giving away the kit lenses I pick up when I give away a Pentax dSLR to someone wanting to learn photography. I gave away my last 18-55 last year to our friend's son.

And I dropped my 28-80 years ago and never replaced it.

So I only have the Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 now.

But . . . I have a full (at least I consider it a full set) of manual focus lenses. LOL.

Every now and then I pull it off the shelf and it will only blink a low battery alert on the lcd, even with new batteries, but 1st time it happened I found that flashing the 1.12 firmware to it again would fix it for a few more years. I noticed that with my Pentax ist DS and K100d.

But . . . I think I tracked down what was happening, at least for me.

When NiMH AA batteries became common, I started using those in my Pentax dSLR cameras and it worked out really well.

And then after a few years I noticed that my cameras were draining really fast.

But then I took a closer look at the batteries I was tossing into it.

What I was noticing was that the older batteries were lasting longer than the new batteries I was putting in.

When I look at the old versus new batteries, I noticed the old batteries were about 1700 mAH. Where as the new batteries were between 2200 and 2500 mAH.

So I hunted down some 1700 mAH rechargeable NiMH batteries and tried them out in my Pentax dSLR cameras and . . . they lasted longer than the 2200-2500 mAH batteries.

I am guessing that my Pentax dSLR cameras like 1700 mAH NiMH batteries more than newer batteries.

I am reading that some suggest the Enloop batteries. I have't found the need to try that out yet.

But . . . yes, the Pentax ist DS is fun even after all these years and still a relevant camera IMHO today.

The WiFi SD Card is certainly helping (at least for me) making it a more useful camera now-a-days! LOL.

Take care & Happy Shooting!
