Time to modify the name of this forum?

I noticed that Nikon forums have updated proper names, even with regards of not-yet-officially-released cameras!

Nikon FX SLR (DF, D1-D5, D600-D850) Talk

But, in the description of the Pentax Forum, it still goes, "... such as the K and *ist D series."

I mean, c'mon?! How many years it's been since *ist D, and how many DSLR models since? And Nikon's forum has yet-unreleased camera name in it!

Is Nikon D1 the latest, even recent, or the most relevant model for people who search for Nikon DSLRs today?

Nikon forums have a plethora of model names in them, and Pentax SLR forum cannot have a description with, at least, a K-5? Or K-3? Or K-1? It is at the level of Konica Minolta Forum, with the descriptor, "Maxxum / Dynax 7D or 5D." Pentax SLR forum is descriptionally burried in time.

Yep. I also found that d850 pretty absurd, before whole camera not yet released!

I can see why APS-C-shooting Pentaxians might want their own forum.  They certainly have the numbers.  As a K-1 owner who just came to Pentax a less than a year ago, I benefit from soaking  up the Pentax lore here.  And some issues, such as Pixel Shift, are common.

I'd rather keep us all together.

Is there any problem ? I appreciate comments and pictures from both K-10 and K-1 users. Lenses are still common and I don't see an overflow here, so no need to change.

Yes you intended the post to be about the latest not yet announced camera but then you went and whined about the *ist D being included in the description... However in Just the same way the Nikon D1 is in the description of the Nikon forum so your comparison between descriptions shows a double standard, you're upset about both an unannounced camera and an old camera but on the old camera part both forums share the same description.

I mean, c'mon?! Is this your biggest gripe about the site?

The name of the forum is "Pentax SLR Talk". That is still accurate and fully inclusive. Both APS-C and FF cameras are discussed here. We do not have separate forums for pro and consumer cameras, so why be more specific? There is absolutely no need to change the forum name every time a new model comes out.

The welcome message at the top of the forum page does not mention Pentax's 645 format DSLRs. Presumably DPR thinks they belong in "Medium Format Talk", where they rate a mention in the welcome message of that forum, but I don't recall any objections to 645 discussions posted here.

There is nowhere else to post content about *ist D series cameras. It would not be the end of the world to drop this from the description, but I see no benefit in purging all mention of cameras more than 10 years old.

I went to look at the 'first page turnover' of this forum and it is about 6 days.  That is not as slow as I thought.  My gut reaction to splitting the forum is that it is too slow in activity to split, but 6 days is faster than it has been and it should ramp up if any release rumors start to come out.  I think we should change the name to K-mount cameras and we'd be ready for the future.  But there isn't enough traffic to split out a pro, FF or 645 format group.

To the OP:

Are you really this offended by the description of the forum name and that it doesn't include newer models?

Are you as easily offended by other aspects in your personal life?

Or is it just perceived slights to the Pentax forum and good name?

I admit, I hang out a lot in the Pentax forum even though I don't own a Pentax because there are some interesting discussions here.

But this thread baffles me.  I honestly want to know if you're this sensitive to perceived slights in other aspects of your life or if it's just a DPR thing or just a Pentax thing

Offended? I don't understand your choice of words. Are you a lawyer?

Are you as easily offended by other aspects in your personal life?

?? Is this a quiz?

Or is it just perceived slights to the Pentax forum and good name?

Name of the forum comes with a description, which shows up in search results and is at the very top of the page. 10 years after the first digital Pentax SLR, in that line of text, perhaps someone could add in, say, a K-1 or K-3? 645Z maybe? Some contemporary Pentax stuff? Just keeping the forum description up to date, huh?

I admit, I hang out a lot in the Pentax forum even though I don't own a Pentax because there are some interesting discussions here.

That is why you don't care.

But this thread baffles me.

Because, as you wrote, you don't use Pentax anymore.

I only stated that in names of other forums reflect latest cameras, why can't Pentax SLR forum reflect in descriptor at least few more modern cameras than the ist*D?

This affects sales of Pentax cameras

Pentax, so far, is commited to SLR design. So the name of the forum is okay, but the description of things discussed could be vastly improved.

If forum names for Nikon cameras are updated, so that people who shop for them see them immediately in forum names, why can't the description of the Pentax SLR forum include a few recent cameras that are available and are landmarks of the brand?

Do people understand these things affect sales of new Pentax cameras? And that Nikon forum names are designed to increase sales?!!

This is what users see when searching for latest Nikon cameras, to learn and buy — DPR forums have their names, wow! There is no mistake — latest cameras, sales go up:

And this is what search shows up when users look for Pentax DSLR cameras:

This is top of the page forum welcome message:

This antiquated descriptor is in meta description of the forum page, ends up in search results (see above). And it is (a) vague and (b) innacurate; what is *ist D series of cameras? Where I can buy latest in that *ist D series, in which shop?

If I search for that series further, I will see that camera was discontinued long ago, and think Pentax has gone out of business, like, Konica Minolta after its Maxxum 5D in the descriptor.

In SLR design of cameras by Pentax, all I can buy are K- and 645- cameras, and for both, not even a single current model is mentioned.

The name *ist is such a classic Pentax marketing blunder that we have to keep it. It is almost as good as the time that Pentax named itself "the official digital camera of the internet."

I agree with the proposal, and, as I understand it this is not a proposal to set up different forums - we're Better Together, even if at times we are a little pedantic.

The current strap line is: 'Welcome to the Pentax SLR Talk Forum, the place to discuss Pentax SLR digital cameras, such as the K and *ist D series'.

Perhaps it should be:

'Welcome to the Pentax SLR Talk Forum, the place to discuss all Pentax APS-C, Full Frame, and Medium Format digital cameras, K mount and 645 mount lenses, and the photography all these facilitate.

(with apologies to M42 users)

This would cover the 645 series - the D, Z, and whatever comes next. It would reflect our inclusive nature; many of us are interested in reading about the 645s.

This would also covers the K-01 which is discussed here even though it is not an SLR, and just maybe Pentax will develop another MILC... eventually. We do think ahead.

It covers our *ist D series and everything from K10D to K-P and K-1,

If we try to be comprehensive we run into problems. Not convinced? Read on...

Pentax nomenclature is either mysterious or inconsistent - depending on your point of view. I looked into a more detailed description, but it does become confusing if we try to be more specific without listing every camera. Feel free to try it: K10d to K200D, K-m to K-r (inc. K2000), K-30 to K-70 (inc. K-500), K-7 to K-3ii, K-01, K-S1 & K-S2, K-1 and KP.  Plus 645D-Z.  Between that lot there are over 30 digital cameras.

And what is a camera without a lens: We, being Pentaxians, attach the K mount and 645 mount lenses: the "K", followed by M, A, F, FA, DA, DA-L, XS, and D-FA. (These letters also cover the 645 mount lenses even though they are an entirely different size). O/A 280+ lenses!

It would be bonkers to include all these categories, which is why I suggest reference to sensor format and lens mount as an inclusive 'cover-all' proposal.

PS: The others are covered in relatively quiet 'Pentax Compact Camera talk' (Q, MX, WG etc, although I am not sure where new WGs and Thetas are covered - they don't seem to appear in Ricoh talk.)

OK, I'll get my anorak.

Re: Time to modify the name of this forum?

Back again!

Having said all that, and read latest OP's last comment above, would it make sense to list just current cameras, and keep it updated? e.g.

'Welcome to the Pentax SLR Talk Forum, the place to discuss all Pentax APS-C, Full Frame, and Medium Format digital cameras, (including K-70, K-3ii, KP, K-1 and 645Z), plus K and 645 mount lenses, and the photography all these facilitate.

Perhaps too wordy, but I do believe lenses and photography merit a general mention.

The Pentax base is not big enough to segment into smaller sub-units, or to to be overly specific.  Are you finding there to be too much traffic to follow?
