Those of you with NX30's - question about higher ISO...

...scenarios.  I have an NX30 (obviously love it) - but I've not used it as of yet at higher ISO scenarios (i.e. 2000 and above).  What have your experiences been in using the NX30 at higher ISO's.  I know the cutoff is for ISO 3200 (I shoot RAW) and I found that odd.

I never go over ISO 2000 with my NX300 because I wasn't happy with the clean noise performance above that.

So what experiences did you have?  Please share any images if possible.

The reason I ask is that I'm taking along the NX30 to an event on the 26th of this month in the wine country of western North Carolina (mountains).  There will be some indoor events in the evening at two of them and I don't want to be disappointed with the images that I know will be captured at ISO 3200 or above.  Otherwise, I'll have to take my Fuji X-T1.

Re: C'mon you NX30 Hommies...

ISO setting should be as low as possible. It is not a problem with static objects - we can always use 100 ISO.

Problem is when we need to freeze a movement and we have slow tele lens F5,6 or if we need larger DOF we must close even  to F11 (DOF in tele range is very small)

In such situations we need very often 1/800s shutter speed or even shorter.

I use max ISO 3200 - this is limited value in auto ISO  - higher can be used manualy . In 100% view picture is noisy but not more then from other cameras in this class (sometimes noise seems higher but it depends from denoising level in compared camera)

Good results can be achieved by post processing and optimal denoising level in software.

If the picture includes not so many fine detail we can use stronger denoising processing.

If there are many small objects denoising will kill them all. Than we must do a compromise procedure. proffesionals do it seperatetly from all RGB canals.

Fortunately sensor 20 MP allows to achieve good lookin 8 MP pictures - enough for 4k screens.

Looking at FHD 2MP ISO 3200 is quite acceptable.

The best solution is aovid higher ISO - and for this purpose using fast lens as 45/F1,8 helps the most.

Take into consideration that ISO value can be different in every camera.

I observed that in the same conditions NX30 offers much brighter pictures than NX10 (ca 2/3-1 EV) so for the same histogram level I can use lower ISO for the same shutter/aperture combination..

Some producers use also RAW pre denoising in camera processing.

Important thing is amount of light - ISO 3200 in lighter scenario looks better than the same camera ISO 3200 in darker scenario.

This is why ISO comparisons are difficult and only experienced users know how to differ which camera works better.

I think fast lens and NX30 allow take pictures in alll conditions.

If better paramters are needed than FF camera is must have.

Sony A7 can be a solution.

Thanks...

I'm quite familiar with various aspects involved with shooting higher ISO scenarios - i.e. moving objects, etc.  With my NX300, I never went above ISO 2000, because oftentimes (I shoot in RAW only) certain types of noise were very difficult (almost impossible) to remove whether in LR or ACR.  Thus my curiosity about the higher ISO files with the NX30.

Re: Thanks...

As I experienced in dark churches my NX30 together with NX16/F2,4 gave me decent quality.

Did you compared RAW histograms between Fuji and NX30 for the same scene/exposition parameters?

I suspect Fuji will use ISO 3200 when NX30 will use ISO 2000.

And if you have lens 16/F2,4 for Fuji.

There is Fuji lens 16/F1,4  but for me too expensive and large.

For my 16/F2,4 I have paid 500 PLN  (ca 130$ )

During processing reducing the size also influences for noise level reduction.

X-T1 has denoised RAW files so fine detail seems blurred in comparison to Sony or Samsung.

I'll have to disagree here with regards to the Fuji...

I use the X-T1, X-E2, X-E1, X-M1, X-A1, and recently got the X-A3.  If there's one area where I strongly feel the Fuji's shine, it is in the area of cleaner higher ISO scenarios.  I'm now using the wonderful Iridient X-Transformer software that converts RAF files into DNG files and the detail I'm getting is fantastic.  So with all of the toys I'm using now - that is, M43, Fuji X, Canon EOS M, and Samsung NX cameras, I'd have to say that when it comes to higher ISO scenarios in low light, I tend to reach for my Fuji cameras overall.

Re: I'll have to disagree here with regards to the Fuji...

Yes that's right noise is smaller but if you compare histograms with the same exposition parameters in RAW (in JPG processin brightness is equalled by camera software) and in camera denoising levela and carefuly evaluating amount of fine detail ...

Removing the noise is simple process bud the cost we pay is also removing fine detail.

It is not possible get optimal balance with the same denoising level for each picture.

This is why some people prefer get original picture than do denoising procedure according to taste.

For my taste Fuji blurres fine detail to much and more picures I take in decent light so I prefer clearer pictures.

For darker conditions the best way is fast lens - so using low ISO.
