Do you still use dp2x ?

Hi guys. What are thoughts about dp2x in 2017? What is it good for and what's bad about it? What do you use it for and when?

It's the only camera I really regretted selling, they're rare as Hens teeth now. Just like any other Foveon camera, it's not for fast shooting, but it had the best colour of all the foveon cameras I've ever had, and cloud rendering was really good on mine as well. It was also pretty resistant to flair by foveon standards, but when you did get it then it was not objectionable, more likely to be usable creatively. It has a slow start up time and makes a weird noise when firing up, like a Dinosaur in pain (use Jurassic park for reference). It's very small with excellent IQ, a truly carry everywhere camera, I miss mine even now. The main issue to be aware of is that the ribbon cable connecting the lens to the Motherboard breaks over time, it's the cameras biggest weak point, though it can be replaced by all accounts. The fault is caused by the ribbon cable weakening when the lens extends and retracts over time.

Some examples for you from mine.

Beautiful images, I love that sensor, the zenith of Foveon! Always on the look out for a DP2s.

Thanks, I wouldn't go that far but I'll take the compliment I'm chasing one down at the moment, fingers crossed.

Still have mine but I use in it's place a DPM2.  Two of the best images I have ever taken were via a DP2X.  I may resurrect my  DP2X.

Con: no viewfinder and the LCD is useless in bright light. Makes manual focus quite difficult. I would not take it anywhere without a viewfinder (e.g. Sigma VF-21) in the hot-shoe.

Con: No articulating LCD. When you own a Panasonic such as mine, the difference is very obvious.

Con: built-in flash not overly powerful. I bought a Metz C-20 for indoor shots.

The Big Pro: Of my several Sigmas, my DP2s consistently takes "better" shots than the others. Helluva lens.

It's a Sigma, who needs fancy dan stuff like a viewfinder and usable LCD? it's a lens with a digital back. I just bought a film camera with no meter and no LCD, it has a dim viewfinder and a barely visible focusing spot (takes awesome images though), where's the fun in making it easy?

Re: Do you still use dp2x ?

Has anyone come across a Photoshop filter that would convert my DP2M images to look like the older Sigma DP2X images with their richly saturated colors?

I don't use PS but try Gaussian blur maybe 0.7 px or less followed by increased saturation in the shadows/mid

It's not the saturation but the colourspace that are different.

Very good comparison examples indeed. But my guess is that they are all in the sRGB color space so perhaps it is the conversion from cam space to RGB that varies?

A problem with Sigma is that every camera model has a different cam to XYZ conversion matrix to any other, whereas the sensor spectral response varies but little from model to model.

Very good comparison examples indeed. But my guess is that they are all in the sRGB color space so perhaps it is the white point (per CIE 1931) that varies?

I guess it comes from that you have to do calculations to get the colours from the three layers as you say. Then how the formula is setup you get different responses and of course the sensors are different.

I put the wb adjustment on the same place for both to compare. So some of the dp2 photos could have been done differently, like the one with the letters in the bark of the tree. However if you see the lobster photo the dp2 has more correct colour on the near wall than dp2m amd I could not get correct colour of this on the dp2m.

Notice that the dp2 gives a more cyan sky while dp2m gives more violet sky in the beach photo.

Still love my DP2s -- compact, light, fun and easy to shoot with. Many quirks and issues, like no VF, etc, but overall I get lots of good shots with it and love the "original" Foveon look to the images. I shoot mostly landscape and always happy with the results.
