Thanks for the hint Dave. I found this extension tube on Amazon:

There are cheaper ones too, but it seems for $30 to get both 11mm and 16mm and with electronic contacts is not too bad.

If this works it seems I'd almost rather have this than a bigger, heavier and much more $$ 80mm/2.8

Since both price and size seem important, you may want to look into the Leica I recommended. It is significantly cheaper than Fuji's 60mm if you take your time to find a good and well priced copy. The dumb adapter to mount it on your x-cam is maybe $20 (depending on the lens, Leica R to Fuji X or Leica M to Fuji X)

Of course, manual focus only, but so would be the adapted Canon or Zeiss. Unlike the Canon, you would have full aperture control.

Or possibly a used Fujinon 60mm is worth cosnidering?

Re: 60mm/2.4 vs Canon macro vs future Fuji macro?

Thanks everyone for the input.

Yes, by "only 2.8" I meant that as I only had a cheap $10 EF-X adapter, I was limited to 2.8 aperture in MF mode.  Yeah, it's really a no go.

The 60mm/2.4 with possibly an extension tube (anybody got favorites or can vouch for one that really works?  I'm sure Fuji's does... wondering if going el cheapo is worth it here) seems like the popular choice and the way to go for me.  Being smaller, having aperture control and AF are all good things.  Some of the favorite shots I took with the Canon 100/2.8 were family portraits.  There is something about the 90-100mm range which is so good for close portraits.....   now just got to get it when its on sale

Thanks for the other suggestions:

  •  Upcoming 80/2.8 - probably too $$$ and big, but we'll see
  • Leica Elmarit Macro 60/2.8 - around $350-600 used; would need an adapter; MF only - not bad if you're only doing macro, but not usable for portraits (of kids anyway)
  • Zeiss Touitt 50/2.8 - probably too $$$ and too short
  • I see Leica has a 100/2.8 - this is even more $$$

Thanks Sjak.  If I was primarily interested in macros, I agree the Leica would be a great choice (plus it is a Leica!)  Since I'm thinking some kid portraits, I think a used 60mm (or some other deal for it) is the way to go.... thanks again!

It is a pretty versatile lens actually, and it has infinity-focus. Many Leica-users have this as one of their all-round lenses.

The color-rendering is pretty warm, which I find a good match to the Fuji. The difficulty I experience is the throw of the focus ring for objects further away; from 25cm to 3m distance is about 330 degrees on the focus ring (so very accurate) and from there to infinity just a few more degrees, so it will require some exercise to get accurate focus between say 2m and 10-20m away.

But all things considered, I think the Fujinon would be the most versatile from your above list.  When shooting children, AF is very useful.

As an alternative to using extension tubes with the 60mm Fuji lens to get greater magnification, you could also consider adding a "close up" filter or "dioptre", for example one of those by Raynox. I have been able to achieve greater than 1:1 with an acceptable working distance.

There is also a Mitakon 4.5x macro with Fuji mount

Folks,

I hear Fuji might come out with a replacement for the 60mm/2.4 sometime. Anybody have any updates?

I'm trying to decide on the following:

  1. Use my Canon 100mm/2.8 macro with my X-T1 through an adapter. It works, but MF only and 2.8 only, and it's big and heavy. But it gets to 1:1 magnification.
  2. Sell my Canon macro, and trade/upgrade to the 60mm/2.4. I get compact size, versatility, everything, for very little $... except I get 1:2 (which is probably fine most of the time)
  3. Wait for the new Fuji macro, but dunno when that would happen.
  4. Get the Zeiss 50/2.8 macro. Its really $$$ though.

So part of the equation comes down to if the new macro is worth waiting for.

thanks,

Evan
