* This month with your Nikon 1 - August 2017 *

Welcome to another monthly thread. There is still no news about the future of the Nikon 1 system - so let's continue working with what we have and getting the most out of it.

The rules are simple:

  • Add your contribution by responding to this first message in this topic.
  • Change the subject of your message, then embed your image into the reply with whatever you’d like to say about it.
  • If you want criticism/critique (C&C) or technique feedback, say so. It’s generally assumed that you want general feedback, but direct requests make it clearer.

The title of the thread shouldn't discourage you from posting older pictures. Feel free to post anything that you found again in your archives, or that you are currently working on.

Link to previous threads:

Cheers,
Holger

View From Whistler

Who says Nikon 1 cameras cannot be used for landscape photography? This was an admittedly "quick grab" "postcardish" shot taken as I was descending down Whistler Mountain in a gondola. I also admit to unashamedly enhancing the photo in Aperture and Pixelmator to reflect the scene as I saw it at the time.

The 10MP Nikon V1 with kit 10-30mm lens may not take photos as detailed as a 42MP Sony A7RII with Zeiss Batis lens, but it sure is a reliable picture taker.

Stuck on a Gerber Daisy.  Nikon v2 with a 105 Micro Nikkor and FT-1 adapter

I've been getting just absolutely crazy magnification with this combo.  Maybe it's time that I play with focus stacking.  I think that I will probably keep this camera even if Nikon announces that demise of CX.  You can do so much with it at extreme focal lengths.

My first participation in one of these. I got the AW1 with both AW lenses 2 days before I left on a 7 day motorcycle trip around New Mexico. Because of the environment, I was a bit afraid to bring the expensive Pentax, so I figured it was a perfect environment for the AW1 (living in a tank bag, and potentially exposed to the elements.) I posed 18 of the photos on my SmugMug page here (and in full resolution, with geotags):

But to pick a couple out. This was shot in B&W right on the main road near the Bisti Badlands:

And the Valles Caldera:

And finally a House near House, NM. This one went through a Color Efex Pro to give it a bit of that Grapes of Wrath feel:

The family farm.

A leisurely walk
2

A few from one of my recent walks.

I photograph whatever interests me.

Puzzled why someone has this in their garden.  Are they using it as an alternative to a proper fence?

Mains powered garden/tree light.  The Greenery came out unexpectedly well.  In the past i complained that N1 was poor for general garden photography

Here I actually came across the artist at work with all his paints and tools.  He refused to be photographed.

More of his work?

Resolution problem in the distance.  Is it focus or just heat shimmer?

Under a flight path.  Plane passes every 5 minutes.

Politics is everywhere.

A few birds from this summer

Eurasian Krestel hovering, looking for something to feed the chicks with.

Female Common Linnet, keeping guard very close to the nest.

Sadly, have not uploaded a lot in August, so I hope these slightly older will do!

Post-processed with Capture NX2 to preserve the colour set - unable to get the same in Capture 1

Open full-size for best viewing (the preview eats too much of the colour and detail).

Cheers,

Notwithstanding the recent rumors that the N1 line is facing imminent end-of-life, I still think that the N1 cameras strike a great balance between IQ and size. On a recent trip to Auckland, NZ and Melbourne, Australia, I found that I could walk with a pack containing the J5 with a bunch of Nikkors, the FT-1 adapter, and the Sirui T-005 tripod and the V1 slung over my shoulder for an entire day with minimal strain. I cannot say that for my previous camera, the excellent but heavy Nikon D7100. I for one will continue to use the N1's for many years to come.

The image quality produced by the J5 in particular are exceptional, but the V1 that I carried for street photography is no slouch either, and is such a pleasure to use.

Some images from this recent trip...

A walk in the park, Auckland, NZ - shot with J5

Victoria State Library, Melbourne - shot with V1

Auckland Museum - shot with V1

St Kilda Pier, Melbourne - shot with the J5

The 70-200 f4 lens is a great match with the V2.
