Sony A9 mechanical shutter will go to 1/32000 and with flash???
1

Sony A9 works with Mechanical Shutter at 1/32000 and Flash? I was playing with my A9 and I discovered that it appears to be firing with mechanical shutter at 1/32000. And just to double check I placed flash on top of my A9 since we all know Sony A9 won't sync flash with electronic shutter - right???? And it works. Tell me if I am wrong, repeat the test yourself. I could not believe myself. Sorry for shaky video with bad sound, I was shooting it handheld with a cell phone, and I was too excited!!!!

If I set mine in mech shutter mode, the fastest it will let me set the shutter is 1/8000 second, and, of course, that won't synch with a normal strobe.

Jim.  Change it from mechanical only to "auto" and be in single af, like ii am saying in video.     In mechanical only it stops at 1/8000.   You must be in auto shutter type.

Crikey, you're right! I thought auto might be dropping to electronic shutter, so I turned all the sound off. But it was the shutter firing, and the exposure at 1/32000th was dimmer than the one shot at 1/8000th (M mode).

So why does the mech shutter setting limit it to 1/8000th if auto allows it? What could go wrong? I've read about high shutter speeds affecting bokeh somewhere, could that have a bearing? Or am I mixing that up and it's an electronic shutter issue?

Now I've got you. I got mechanical shutter sound at 1/32000 that way, and the image dimmed by two stops over 1/8000.

I'll have to test it with the scope to see if the camera is actually using the mechanical shutter.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim some people think it is a firmware bug and both mechanical and electronic shutter go on at the same time, mechanical closes at 1/8000 so that explains that I am hearing it. But that does not explain why flash works properly. Here is the EXIF of one of my photos.

I've noticed that some of the photos shot my way exhibit banding with Flashes so maybe whoever suggested both shutters go on at the same time, is right.

Let me know what you figure out it means.

If both shutters fired at once, the mechanical shutter would be finished when the ES had reset only half the sensor. The ES would continue to reset the rest of the sensor, and that part would never be exposed to light since the mechanical shutter would have already closed.

shouldn't the mechanical shutter sound twice? because it sounds as EFCS.

Interestingly, it does not work with the Sony HVL-F60M as the flash forces the shutter speed to 1/250, but it does work fine at 1/32000 with the AD200, just like in your video.

Is yoir hvl60m in hss mode and looking straight at 90 percent angle.   Must have both for it to operate above 1/250

Re: Sony A9 mechanical shutter will go to 1/32000 and with flash???

Jeff2013 it is my greatest pleasure to see you write this. It is very disappointing but also odd.

Today i fired off a couple of really perfect shots w flash at 1/128 105 mm in manual at 1/8000 f1.8 ISO50 got about 6 or 7 shots. Theu looked great. But i dont know how it happened because i cant replciate that. When I turn the flash off it allows that setting. Or if the flash is set to manual. But as soon as I turn it on the speed cjanges to 1/250...and it wont budge in ANY MODE! Setting is Auto/Mech shutter. Ah me! I just bought this flash. What to do!

Re: Not mine

Hi Jim, I'm your fan and I always read your reviews and articles.

Just few days ago I started this thread:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/61008485

I'm really interested in your opinion about the possibility  to add to the A9 the ability to sync the flash while using silent electronic shutter via a firmware update.
