S90, thought I'd play with it again
2

I haven't used my S90 'for real' for quite a while, talking on here about compacts caused me to get it out and play with it a bit. I tried some action shots with our dog and his soccer ball, then snapped a few flowers. Boy the action one's were tough, used AV mode SS 800, the sun was going down so lighting was tough. I guess it did OK for this hard task I gave it. The flowers came out pretty good though for no direct light.

(just noticed I edited these in LR and had it set to reduce size and not include exif, they are shutter 1/800th, wide open F2, various iso ranges, a few at 80, I think a couple hit up above iso800)

Re: S90, thought I'd play with it again

I still have mine!  It has become a backup to the newer G7X II.   I bought it new and fitted my S90 with a Franiec front grip, and a Lensmate rear wheel protector ring and used it that way for years.  Later, I picked up a used S95; but preferred the S90's color.

The S90 was the first of the S series to have image stabilization.  It lacked automatic correction of chromatic aberrations; but images from the S90 really don't show CA, a tribute to the lens quality.  All in all, a great little camera, especially for 2009.

Cool , nice to know someone else uses the old S90 too. I like mine, it was my first pocket cam that usable high iso, I remember someone way back then posted a shot of their cat at iso 3200 and it was pretty decent looking so got one myself. I wish the lens was faster and wider, but it's a nice little small camera for sure!

Re: S90, thought I'd play with it again

Dear Ron,

I still have and use a Powershot S90. In fact, I only bought mine a couple of months ago. I use it mostly to take pictures to share on Facebook, but I'm pretty impressed with some of the shots I've made with it. For a pocketable camera it's very nice.

I'm kind of old school, it was bit of a struggle for me to get used to having no viewfinder. I can't bear to use a phone to take pictures for sharing on social media sites, so I carry the S90 along with me to family reunions and birthday parties and things like that. I'll use it until it dies and try to find another, or maybe an S100 or S120?

I like buying used digital cameras that others have replaced with later models. They are all new to me and I enjoy figuring them out and seeing what kind of results they can produce.

I don't print anything larger than 8 x10, and I harbor no illusions of being recognized for my photography. However, I can take pictures and make prints to share with family and friends with the S90 that they are pleased with, and that's all that matters to me.

Regards,

Tim Murphy

Re: S90, thought I'd play with it again

I've had the S90 since 2009, I tried the "new and improved" S95 and went back to the S90.  I also had several G series cameras.  The G15 was my last one, and it was better than the S90; but I still preferred using the S90.

If yours dies, and you want to move up, go for an S100 or S110, and skip the S120.  Better still go for a G7X II.

Tim,

I really respect the enjoyment you get, buying used cameras and figuring them out.

That's really a very  cool attitude..!!
