E-pm2 Firmware update without cable?

I just got the camera second hand and it came without the USB cable. Is there a way to load the update to the SD card to install it?

Thanks,

Not that I'm aware of

You have to use their updater app, but it also updates all lenses as well.

cables are thankfully not expensive

Thanks,

There is a site:

That has a collection of firmware for various Olympus cameras, along with documentation of how to update (or backdate) firmware without the cable.  Unfortunately, the E-PM2 is not one of the models whose firmware was collected.

According to the Olympus documentation, the last firmware release for the E-PM2 was 1.5 in January, 2016:

However, the last 3 firmware releases were for the newer high end Olympus lenses (12-100mm pro, 300mm pro, 40-150mm pro4) or the Toshiba FlashAir cards.  If your camera is at 1.2, you might not need to update to 1.5.

So, the solution is to buy a 3rd party clone cable that allows you to update the firmware if needed.

Thanks. The camera has the original 1.0 firmware...

Anybody know if the 1.2 firmware make any real difference?

From the list of features, probably not, unless you were going to use non-micro 4/3rds lenses or the VF-4 viewfinder.

I was thinking of this improvement ”Stability of touch panel operation during playback was improved.” but yes I want to use manual lenses so I need the upgrade to atleast 1.2 anyway. Thanks!

Yeah, but the touch panel is just an enhancement when reviewing pictures, it doesn't add anything to taking the pictures (at least according to the description).

Note, Olympus only gives you the ability to go to the latest level (1.5), you can't pick which intermediate level to go to.  The lightsnowdev site does allow you to downgrade the firmware, but unfortunately the E-PM2 is not a camera that they collected the firmware for (you might shoot off an email to the owner of the site, maybe he can download the E-PM2 firmware).

As I said, just get a clone CB-USB6 cable to do the download.  If you don't have other Olympus cameras, you will need to download the firmware updater for your Windows or Apple system.

I do have an older Olympus somewhere... maybe I still have the cable.

Thanks

Hi thought id just add a comment that https://lightsnowdev.com now has e-pm2 firmware and instructions to update via sd card.

I just updated mine to 1.5.. and works fine this way.

Works on E-M1 and E-M1 II.  I think it should work with any MFT.

Except for the newest cameras (E-m1 mark II, E-PL9, and E-m10 mark III).  I believe the E-m1 mark II uses a standard USB C cable and the E-PL9 and E-m10 mark III use a standard USB micro-B cable.

I stand corrected. E-M1 uses CB-USB6.  E-M1 II uses CB-USB11.

The site has also E-PM2 firmware (I used it for this camera, too as I do not have Windows or Mac) and I have looked now, all firmwares up to 1.5.

The original firmware is quite buggy (mostly weird side effects with a few settings). It is better to update it. I have not checked whether any of the bugs I came across in the original firmware have been resolved by updates, because they are edge cases and I forgot how to reproduce them. But that's the idea.

I know this is an old thread - maybe it will benefit someone else.

If you live near any camera stores, check and see if they will be having a day with an Olympus rep there. On "Olympus Day" they will usually clean your camera and sensor for free and update your firmware. I took in a couple of Oly bodies the last time there was an "Olympus Day" near me.

Yes. There were a few models that you have to first go to an intermediate version (IIRC, the E-m5 mark I was one), but the E-pm2 doesn't list any restrictions.

The lightsnowdev site does have the firmware 1.6 for E-pm2.

Unfortunately, it doesn't provide the new Olympus E-m5 mark III, E-m1 mark III, and E-PL10 firmware files.
