Cheap mirrorless: is the M10 a good choice?

I am looking for a nice small mirrorless camera, but unfortunately my budget is quite low.
So I started reading websites about the topic and found that the M10 is well regarded.
For example:
http://www.sceltamirrorless.it/migliori-mirrorless-economiche/
http://www.amatech.it/recensione-canon-eos-m10-mirrorless-piu-economica-e-performante/
(
sorry if I linked italian sites...)

My main interest is in videomaking, I use manual focus and I have quite a few Canon EF (not EF-S) lenses.
Do you think that I should choose the M10 or go for something else like a Panasonic?

Most m10s are selling with the adapter so you could use your lenses where going to another brand might Anke that harder.  I have the M10 and possibly the only downside is no hotshoe if you plan to ever use an external flash nbut the 180 flip up screen is nice if you want watch what you shoot for vlog or selfies, etc.  Rumor is the M20 is coming soon, so maybe wait a bit and see what shakes out in the next month.  M10 sales will probably be better than.

I have little interest in video, so I am not talking from personal experience but everything I have read here suggests that even the latest Canon Ms are well behind offerings from other manufacturers (like Panasonic) when it comes to video.

I would suggest that if it is primarily for video, that perhaps you should look elsewhere.

A camera that punches far above its weight...
1

I originally got the M10 and 15-45 for "da Misses" awhile back.  Heck, I only paid somewhere in the vicinity of $369 USD off of eBay and it came with a US warranty.  But after awhile, it was obvious that like so many other folks who like convenience, my wife kept using her smart phone to take photos - sigh.  So I took the M10 back.

One of the things that immediately caught my eye about the M10 when it arrived was the sleek and simple appearance of the camera.  It is very easy to operate and feels really good in the hand.  I purchased a nice brown bottom only camera case for it and the M10 looks really good with it on.

The images it can capture are superb, and as much as I hate to say this, even though it still has only an 18 MP sensor, it sometimes exhibits better IQ than the M3 - now go figure.  The 15-45 lens that came with it is actually very good - slightly better in sharpness than the three 18-55's that I have (those came with their respective cameras).  So although the M10 is a simple camera - yet has all the bells and whistles within the menu structure - its IQ is second to none within the M series of cameras.  And at the prices you can get them for now - in particular, on eBay in various colors - one would be remiss in not getting one.

An eBay listing of all of the M10 kits...

They're behind in video quality (ie no 4K) but dual pixel AF as found in the M5, M6 and probably the soon to arrive M20 is considered the best and easiest video AF system there is. Canon gives mediocre but in-focus video, others give beautiful but often out-of-focus video. That's the choice.

Save yourself a lot from compromises. Go with panasonic or sony.

You never mentioned your budget, but if you want full control without the high cost, the panasonic gh4 is still available for about u$1,000 or less. There are also the GX85, or even the older G7 at around U$500-550 only. Not as flexible as the Gh4, but it should be good enough. The G85 is also good at U$998 with a 12-60 lens already. But if you go for the G7, or GH85 these gives you some change left to get native lenses.

Your choices for Sony are the a6000. They are about U$600-700 about now. The A6300 will give you better AF and 4k. The a6000 give you only FHD.

It is easier to find adapters for Sony though if you are using canon or nikon lenses. But since you say you will go manual, then you can find enough adapters for panasonic.

There's more than just the equipment you should consider. These 2 brands offer aids to make video shooting easier. Focus peaking, zebra, image magnification are a few things. They also give you options for codecs that will make your video better in post. Canon will not give you these options, at least not in the M series.

Not disagreeing (I have a M5 and 70D, but rarely use either for video), but the OP is asking about a M10, which doesn't have DPAF, and will almost certainly perform significantly worse for video that much of the competition.

If it was for stills mostly, the recommendation would probably be different.

Yep, I forgot to add that caveat at the end. The M20, expected soon, is likely to have the PDAF sensor though and be about the same price the M10 launched at.

Get the SL2 kit with the EF-S 18-55mm lens. It has DPAF, tilt screen, better bit rate for recording video, an OVF for fast accurate auto focusing and it supports EF/EF-S lenses natively. It shares the same sensor as the M5/M6/80D/T7i/77D and has the Digic 7 processor. The SL2 is a far better camera than the M10. Also the body only is going for $549 and there might be a price drop on it in a couple of months.

Re: Cheap mirrorless: is the M10 a good choice?

Hi everybody, and thanks for your answers!

To sum it up: Canon is not so good for video, but it's quite good for pictures. An alternative might be the SL2 or going for a totally different brand.

I was attracted by the M10 because it is really cheap and I could use it with my Canon gear (I already have Canon DSLR, and I am not disappointed by them for photo use). Is there any possibility that Canon will provide a better video-oriented camera in the near future?

I don't think we will see one in the near future.  There might be a 7D3 later this year but it will be expensive.  An 80D replacement might come next year and have 4k video but this is just speculation.  Canon has upgraded the bulk of its DSLR and MILC camera line the past year so don't expect too much beyond the 7D3 any time soon.
