You can improve the close focus distance with a diopter filter. I handhold a +5 B+W in front of my RX100. They're $25.

Improve 'close focus" distance by how much? A couple inches? IMHO still too short for other than static subjects.

... I don't understand your response. A "couple inches" is a lot in close up photography.

Plus the OP noted "Quality Macro capability required"; diopter filter not:-| going to help with a lens soft corners, may make worst.

I never claimed it was equal to a macro lens. You pointed out close focus as a deficiency of 1" sensor cameras, and I'm offering a workaround to improve it...

Sorry IMO not much of a workaround ... as I clearly noted for use "for other than STATIC subjects". I first played around with various close-up filters over 30 years ago.

Well, no need to trouble yourself with me anymore then, since you know it all. Clearly there's only one way to accomplish any task, and that's your way.

Thanks for the reply. My G11 is working fine, one of my objectives with upgrading is lens speed. G11 shots during the evening are difficult and I find myself adjusting ISO significantly in order to acquire an acceptable shutter speed. Another thing about the G11 is that it doesn't present blues/purples very well in the final image.

if you have a scene with mostly purple and or blue, auto WB won't work very well. It's the nature of auto WB not the camera's fault

I guess maybe I'm just looking to move into the 21st century too...., and want something that handles somewhat like the G11. It appears the G7XII includes modifications that make it easier to handle with only my right hand.

Quality Macro capability required - natural insects and trout flies. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Don't get a G7X II for macro. They are not very useful for that. In every other way they absolutely trounce the old G series, but they can't do macro.

I know this is the Canon section, but you may also consider the FujiFilm X30.

I second the X30. Fun to use, 2/3" sensor,

2/3" sensor is just another way of writing 1/1.5" which is marginally bigger than the 1/1.7" of the G16 series

nice EVF, super macro mode, fast lens and durable build. Oh and those Fuji colors

I have two initial impressions from your reply.

1. Appears if you're unable to reply with facts, need to resort to personal attacks.

2. You're totally clueless that ALL my replis are in regards/ response to the OP's first post; i.e., if OP's "Quality Macro capability required" a high priority then the SIMPLE FACT is compacts with short WA to mid-tele (24-100mm +/-) zoom are not the best option.

Base upon OP's posts, doubtful using close-up filters would provide the results OP looking for, and doubtful OP would want to use close-up filters as a "work around".

As to your:

Clearly there's only one way to accomplish any task, and that's your way.

For "my" personal IQ preferences yes; based on using various film and digital cameras since 1967, and my own dark room for period of 10 years.

Rather than tic-for-tact response, in reply to your close-up to some of mine ...

Yours:

My preferences with closeup images is to have the main subject/ focal point in focus, and control DOF (amount of background blurring) with focal length, aperture, and/ or PP.

First several images taken with the little ZS50 with the small 1/2.3" 12 MP sensor.

BOTTOM LINE: To each his/ her own preferences.

Cheers,
Jon

Figured out posting of images. This is what I do stream side. Natural insects. Or, trout flies tied at the vise. Still not sure where I'm headed with my camera replacement.

Thanks Marie, our local Trout Unlimited chapters are doing all we can to attract younger people into fly fishing/resource preservation. Women too. 😀

Marie+fly rod=not a pretty sight LOL. Give me a rod & reel! My husbands license plate is IFISH. Oldest son has FLYF1SH. Younger son had FSNPRO...he meant fishing pro but it looked like fashion pro LOL. Oldest son spent a month traveling from NH to Montana back in 2004, did a lot of fishing & a lot of (camera) shooting.

Nice plates! Mine's PENZZZ (Penns Creek in PA). I use my images in fly fishing and fly tying presentations. Always looking for image quality improvement.

That was a test image I posted, I don't know why you're bragging about how long you've been doing photography, and posting all those images. Are we comparing photography skills now?

So what did you decide to buy? (n/t)

I'm a bit stuck on macro performance, and am beginning to better understand why some 1" sensor cameras struggle with macro performance. I need to get into my local camera shop and handle a few cameras, maybe get chance to try macro settings. I'm not totally set on Canon, but would like to see what the G5X in a Mark II would offer (some day perhaps). No big rush to get this done. One thing that is clear - all cameras in this space have shortcomings (macro, grip/no grip, etc) so I'll have to decide what I truly can live without. Thanks!

I am interested in a G5X M2 as well.  I really like the controls and feel of the G5X - so much so that I almost bought one earlier this year.

It only has one major drawback... the price. 🤔
