G16 Mainboard

Purchased a second hand faulty G16 inc charger and battery for a very low price, opening it revealed a badly corroded main board, both sides which I removed and cleaned but to no avail.

Any one know of a cheap source for replacement boards?

Cant wait to get this camera going, externally it looks mint, really want to experience that very fast lens at the long and short ends. It will complement my G12 and GX1 quite nicely I think.

The origional G series cameras are just so good especially the fast lenses of the 15 and 16.

Re: G16 Mainboard

Looking at aliexpress I see them down to about US$73.00 delivered

https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/G16-mainboard-for-canon-G16-main-board-G16-motherboard-camera-Repair-Part-free-shipping/1048661_32725103773.html

which is getting more reasonable but I was hoping for in the US$50.00 region. Next week I will be in China for a month or so though in Northern  China rather than Shenzhen where most of these suppliers seem to reside and I might be able to find a better deal.

A few moths ago I took a faulty GF6 for repair to Panasonic in China where they replaced the LCD and all the flip out mechanism and flexi tracks cost including labour US$30.00, so I am hoping for similar gearing for the Canon G16 too

Beware that these cameras have quite a bit of camera specific calibration stored in the onboard flash memory. If you manage to successfully replace the main board but aren't able to get the factory adjustment (which requires Canon service software or some very hard core reverse engineering), you may run into image quality problems or other issues.

One CHDK user a long time ago got a replacement board directly from Canon, only to find that they apparently ship them in factory mode, or perhaps with nothing but a bootloader: https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=5969.0

Re: G16 Mainboard

Thanks greatly for that!

I know in dealing with a Sony SLT a while ago that the same problem existed but thought it was just Sony that did that.

Makes sense that a few optical parameters get tweaked in software to account for mechanical sensor placement and other mechanical details too.

If the worst comes to pass I will send it into Canon China for them to replace and set up as I don't have access to Canons proprietary flashing software. Bit of a shame thou as I am an electrical engineer and spend a lot of my time repairing and designing the most complex of equipment.
