Birds, Chicks, Turtles, Reptiles, Rabbit, Owls, Bird-Eat-Bird

A little mix of all kinds of stuff for this thread this week.  Out and about this April in the Wakodahatchee Wetlands and Green Cay Wetlands, when the nesting season was in full force - there were baby chicks of all kinds of birds, as well as slightly cooler weather making for lots of other animals around to shoot.

Lenses identified in the descriptions - either the FE70-300mm G OSS or Tamron 150-600mm, shooting on the A6300.

All shots posted at 1400 pixels on the long side if you click the originals:

A green heron momma in the shade of a fan palm, with her screaming chicks looking for food (FE)

One final shot of last week's rare sighting - the least grebe.  He was there the following weekend so I got this last shot, and he was gone after that (Tamron)

Really close up with that nesting woodpecker in her palm tree condo (Tamron)

And her downstairs neighbor - the eastern screech owl, looking down on the ground at something making noise and bothering her (Tamron)

Then there's that guy over there with the big lens - making sure he's not a threat! (Tamron)

An older green heron chick, born a few weeks earlier - he's got his colors coming in, but still has the peach fuzz feathers (Tamron)

A young soft-shell turtle, lying on a bed of algae (Tamron)

A great blue heron, wading through the waters along the edge of the reeds looking for fish (Tamron)

A basilisk lizard perched up on a dead tree stump for a look around (Tamron)

Closeup with a tricolor heron having a look around through the reeds (Tamron)

A great egret chick looking for some food from mom towering over (Tamron)

Glossy ibis newly hatched chicks under mom (Tamron)

A marsh rabbit eating some grass while sitting in the grass (FE)

Closeup of a baby alligator, floating in the open water but close to the reeds where he could run and hide (FE)

More baby great egrets screaming for food...(FE)

The bird world can be cruel...remember the glossy ibis chicks?  Well when mom ibis left the nest to get food, mom great egret went over and snatched one of the chicks, and fed it to her baby egret.  He swallowed most of it down in the nest behind the leaves, but I caught this last swallow with the feet still hanging out of its mouth (FE)

A few random shots from the last week or so. I've been traveling most of the last two months, so haven't been out with the 70-400mm.

Nice variety showing how many species call our wetlands home. Love the shot of the owl with it's head sticking out of the palm. It was good seeing and talking with you on Saturday.

Having fun with a new pair of Nissin Di700A speedlights on either side of the bird feeder, shot with my A7R2 and 70-400G,

Contrary to what the EXIF shows, the shot was 1/125 at F/22, at 135 mm. I don't know why the EXIF would show a 1/10000 shutter, when the camera max's out at 1/8,000.

Really enjoy seeing all the little ones Justin.  Also like the fine catches of the Red-bellied and owl  in the tree.  For me, these kind of shots a rarity.  Finally, nice ones of the turtle and alligator  I'll never see those two around here

Spectacular series Rosco.  You're always able to catch a huge variety.  I don't see that many species in a month!

That last shot is something too - just the right composition and shutter.

Re: ***Weekly Wildlife Thread: July 16th - 22nd***

It's a nice shot, but I think f8 would be a better choice of aperture.  Not sure how well that would work with the lights though.

Hi Ed,

Unfortunately F8 would only have given a depth of field of 0.31 inches, not enough for that bird. I went to F22 specifically to bring the DOF up to 0.87, to keep more of the Cardinal in focus.

Of course with the aperture closed down that much, I had to crank up the power on the strobes, and that not only brought up the Cardinal, but also caused the background, shot in daylight, to look like it was shot at night - an interesting affect.

In case any readers are wondering, yes that is a wild bird flying free, so yes, meeting the requirements of the thread. She was lured into camera/strobe range by the offer of a free lunch!

Kevin
