Re: Which camera is better? :-)

It might be more about the overall composition and backgrounds than the camera.  Personally, I like th4e S3IS shot with the black background and well saturated colors on the S3IS shot.  The S3IS was only 6 MP; but that's really enough for a good 8" x 10" print, and it has a fast lens of excellent quality.

The SX30IS background isn't out of focus enough to not be distracting.  It would also be better with -1/3 stop of exposure compensation, and maybe some increased saturation.

The SX50HS has an excellent lens; but the bird is slightly over exposed, so it's a little faded.

I am a bit biased, but the 50 hs shot of the bird in my opinion is almost spot on,

very clear....

The bird (gull?) is in a tough lighting position, as can be seen from the top of the fence post. Light coming in from the right is fully illuminating the head but the side feathers, already dark, are in the shadows. I may be wrong but I would think that would be a difficult shot for any camera.

How can one really judge "which camera is better?" when each photo is a different scene, taken at different times, in different lighting conditions?

If question is which photo we like best as a picture, that might be answerable....

just my 2 ¢....

Re: Which camera is better? :-)

The best camera is always in the hands of the best photographer, but my big shock owning the S5 and then buying a "sunny day zoomer" in the SX10 (which can only blush before the ultimate sunny day SX50) was how the aperture slams shut as you increase the focal distance. Here is a homemade side by side for my cameras:

Canon TELEPHOTO Av limits
Focal S5is SX10is Ix300
28mm n/a f/2.7 f/2.0
35mm f/2.7 f/3.2 f/2.8
40mm f/2.8 f/3.2 f/3.2
50mm f/3.2 f/3.5 f/4.0
70mm f/3.2 f/4.0 f/4.5
80mm f/3.5 f/4.0 f/5.0
100mm f/3.5 f/4.5 f/5.6
180mm f/3.5 f/5.0 n/a
432mm f/3.5 f/5.0 n/a
480mm n/a f/5.7 n/a
560mm n/a f/5.7 n/a

At 180mm to 432mm the S5 can expose at f3.5 and the SX10 at f/5.0. Handheld walkabout on an overcast day (no shadows on the ground) give me the S3 for the faster telephoto, so I don't have to carry a tripod and shoot 1/30 sec, blurry because the bird keeps breathing. (I'll grant the SX50 can shoot at higher ISO, but not as much higher as it brags.)

I don't bird, but have shot pets, small animals and kids - they just vibrate with life and if you don't have shutter speed you get a blur.
