Is the EOS T1i a good starter DSLR

I just picked up a EOS T1i for dirt cheap on Ebay. Is this a good starter for a novice? Any advice for getting feet wet for a photography/video business?

Particularly read the section on movie mode - given that the camera is 8 years old things have moved on a long way in terms of video making

I started off on a T1i and I still work off it. I think its a fantastic camera to get started on, its very simple to use, its not overly complicated and you can get some great shots on it. It is a crop sensor dslr but for the guy starting off it doesn't really matter. It's definitely a good starting point, especially once you jump into manual mode.

I started in digital with an EOS 350D, so the T1i would certainly be several steps up from that.  For learning the basics, it should be more than good enough.

After about ten years, I upgraded to a used T4i, because I needed live view for macro, which is 80% of what I do.  If live view wasn't an absolute necessity for me, I'd probably still be using the 350D.

Going from a T1i to professional photography and video in the same sentence? Good to dream big.

I had one of these and it is very good for making raw images at its base ISO, gets kind of noisy much above that. It makes excellent video snapshots but the lack of a tilting LCD can make that difficult in bright sunlight. The controls are not difficult to master.

Presuming your sample is in full working condition you can do amazing things with it if you are willing to learn.

To your first question - yes, a T1i in working order is a great camera for a beginner to learn on.

Tips for starting a photo/video business? Learn as much as you can about taking photos and videos while you still have a day job! There is a lot more to than just pointing a camera in the general direction of the action and pushing a button. The fanciest camera in the universe still needs talent, skill, and experience behind the screen in order to make it sing.
