Olympus E-M1ii thumbnails in windows explorer

Hello!

I've searched other forums and googled about codecs and windows updates. Without success.

Has any one found a solution to how to show the thumbnails of the ORF-files (form E-M1ii) in windows explorer. I would even consider using another explorer och photo manager that you guys can recommend to easy browse them. I don't want to import them or something like that. Just a quick easy thumbnail and support to view in a regular window like windows photo viewer or simlar to spot what sort of photo it is.

Big thanks guys! /Mattias

Maybe FastPictureViewer Codec

I'm not sure if it already supports the E-M1 Mk. II, but in general, this is THE solution to get camera raw files to show as thumbnails in Explorer:  http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

You have to download the Windows CODEC from Microsoft to have the most recent new camera RAW Codec. Since I don't have the E-M1 II, I can't tell if the it is supported. If not, wait a few months until Microsoft update the Codec.

Here the website to download,

Unfortunately for me this link is only for Windows 2000 and XP.  I have Win 10, is there an up to date version?

I think this covers all Windows versions. A search for Windows 10 Codec points to the same link.

Re: Olympus E-M1ii thumbnails in windows explorer

I tried running the the CODEC file but it has not made any difference. For the benefit of the OP, I have the latest version of Windows 10, the OMD EM 1 MKII and also tried the trial version of FastPictureViewer. It did produce thumbnail images and I could open them in Windows Photo Viewer but not able to open them in the Photos App as the images were not supported.  Interestingly, my Panasonic RW2 raw images are not supported by Windows CODEC either.

The Windows codec file doesn't work on Win 10. I've even tried modifying the installation program without success.

The FastPictureViewer codec works with all "desktop" programs/apps but doesn't work with any "modern" app. (Note: a "desktop" program is one you can install yourself from an installation file and a "modern" app is one you can only install from Windows App Store). Windows Photo Viewer predates the arrival of "modern" apps and Microsoft is depreciating it in favour of Photos App (grrr..).

FastPictureViewer is unable to do anything about this as it's Microsofts policy to restict the access "modern" apps have to the system preventing them from seeing the FastPictureViewer codecs.

Try FastStone Image Viewer

http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

It's a freeware program that supports more formats than windows file explorer.

It doesn't enable thumbnails in windows file explorer but generates its own thumbnails internally.

It is a very useful program that allows you to make basic edits and renaming, either to individual files or batches of them. I use it all the time.

Thanks Peter, Faststone worked a treat! I can now view my RW2 & ORF images without having to open PS all the time.

Re: Maybe FastPictureViewer Codec

I have the latest version of the Fast Picture Viewer codec pack.  Does not support E-M1 ii nor Pen F.  It did work for the E-M1.

Something interesting - my work computer was just upgraded to Windows 10 with Office 2016.  It supports thumbnails of .ORF from both of these new cameras.

While it is no longer supported by Google, Picasa 3.9 will work with E-M1.2 orf files.

Mattias, this works fine with E-M1 MkII ORFs.

http://www.picmeta.com/products/picture-information-extractor.htm

I use MetaRaw and CS6 to open them.

Faststone Viewer also displays the E-M1 MkII thumbnails.

Re: Olympus E-M1ii thumbnails in windows explorer

Thank you but will it show the thumbnails in windows explorer? Or I have to browse through that program? I have faststone and for that I need to use the program. No thumbnails in windows.

Re: Olympus E-M1ii thumbnails in windows explorer

No, thumbnails don't show in Windows Explorer, you have to use the program.

The free version allows viewing and opening of files in your editor of choice. It also shows complete EXIF, XMP and Maker Data, including keywords and notes you might have applied.

The paid version allows editing of editable fields.

Re: Olympus E-M1ii thumbnails in windows explorer

The latest Fast Picture Viewer codec pack supports EM1 Mk2 orf files as thumbnails in Windows 10.  It costs $9 or $10 US if I recall.  The files show as thumbnails and then will open with Windows Picture Viewer, which is what I use to do a quick cull and delete before importing into Lightroom.  I suspect you'll be able to use other Windows photo programs to view the files as well.

Did you get the Fast Picture Viewer Pro viewer ($55.00) or just the codec pack ($14.99)?

I got the latest version of the codec pack ($9.99). But no working. Maybe a set-up problem.

George, I just bought the codec pack (for 3 computers, so about $25 or so, but the same thing as a your single use pack).  It clearly states in the specs that it supports em1mk2 orfs.  You might want to go into the control panel and programs, delete the pack, and then reinstall.

This may be a late reply but I came across this Codec that can show Thumbnails for ORF files. I used it and it works for many other file types as well.
