Alternatives to the Canon S90 nostalgic mode.

Hi everyone, sorry for solliciting you for such a nerdy question on my first post !
My Canon S90 point n shoot camera is getting old, it has a big dust spot on the sensor so I guess I'll have to change it and buy another (cheap) pns camera...
The only concern I have, is that I really like that grainy black n white "nostalgic mode" (there are a few topics on the subject on this board, that's how I ended up here, but they are all from around 2010.)
My question is : do you know if any of the new models on the market have a similar scenery mode ? Thanks for reading me, and for your suggestions !

(oh, and one pic taken today with the good old S90 for illustration :

IMO the new editing apps do a much better job of this filmic look than any camera. Plus then you're not locked into a b&w image. Try Snapseed or VSCO, for example.

Thanks, that's good to know ! But I'd rather have the function directly on the camera, I'm usually too lazy to do some image editing afterwards

(and I don't have nor want a smartphone either...)

In the current Canon point-and-shoots, there are Toy Camera mode, monochrome and soft-focus modes, etc.

You could try Toy Camera mode,  and crop out (in-camera) the vignetted corners and edges of Toy Camera  mode shots.

Another  way to (sort-of) emulate the grainy black-and-white effect of your trusty  S90, would be to shoot in monochrome mode, at a higher, say, 1200 ISO.

Another possible method could be to shoot in monochrome at a wider angle, then crop in-camera to emulate graininess.

All of this accomplished in-camera, of course, given your desire to avoid post-processing on a computer or smartphone.

You probably will be delighted with the image quality and low-light performance of the current Canon PowerShot cameras,  they are very powerful.

Good luck, and please let us know how it goes..!!

Thanks for the suggestions (high ISO shooting isn"t exactly the same, I'd also need to push the contrast up I guess...). Actually, I found a cheap second hand Sony RX100 so I'll give it a try. And if it hasn't anything comparable to the nostalgic mode, well, I'll still have my s90 in a drawer...

My G7X II has a high contrast black and white mode with three levels of contrast and graininess. It's not the nostalgia mode that allowed you to fade the color and make your shot look like an old color print from a long time ago like I could do on my older Gs, but it's strictly black and white. The contrast and grain really allow you to add quite a bit of punch to your shot. Here's a snapshot I took of a tractor with the setting at its lowest.

Andy,

I really like that look.

I'm wondering if perhaps I can obtain something like that with my G3X?

Any ideas, anyone?

Re: Alternatives to the Canon S90 nostalgic mode.

Thank you. This is the kind of effects I was looking for, yes (not the sepia settings, the grainy B&W). I already ordered the RX100, which is still cheaper than a G7X II at the moment, but I'll keep your suggestion in mind if I'm disatisfied with it for some reason... Txs

I found on this site that the G3X does have a "nostalgic" creative mode : http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-g3x/canon-g3xDAT.HTM
If it's close to the S90's, maybe you can get a similar effect using it ?

Yes, and there are other Creative Shot mode filters which I have not yet explored.....

Thanks, Chaplain Mark! I wonder if your nostalgic setting is like the setting on the older G-models...I liked using that setting to fade the color and really make the picture look like an old picture. Play with that setting and show us what you come up with. I also agree that there are settings that I haven't even played with yet. The creative potential in these small cameras is just amazing!

Andy,

Methinks what I will do is to shoot and post some side-by-side comparison shots, using the various creative shot filters, for direct comparison....
