Just got the new Sigma 100-400mm Contemporary lens
2

I really wanted something between my very light Canon 55-250mm STM lens and the big Tamron 150-600mm. For the price, the Sigma 100-400mm seemed to offer a lot of lens in a compact package for a reasonable price. The lens came today and I had a chance to try it out. I left my T6S in P mode and did not do any further testing today due to the abundance of biting insects that seemed to target both my wife and I. It was a rather uncomfortable shoot, and I could not stay out long enough to really go through a lot of setting options.

The lens weighs about 42 ounces and is fairly compact, making it relatively easy to carry, especially compared to the Tamron. Controls are all smooth and the lens looks and feels well built. These are a few of my first test shots ... I will try to post more as the bombing bug battle subsides a bit.

Based on my limited experience so far, the lens seems fairly sharp, focuses quickly, and exhibits nice contrast and pleasant bokeh. Blown shots were due to missed focus or too slow a shutter speed for moving birds. When I have more time, I will try AV and TV modes to see where the "sweet spots" are for this lens and subject matter.

I think this lens will work out very as I spend more time with it. Nothing like playing with a new lens!

Thanks for this! I have a T6s, and this lens is on my short list (if I don't get one of the 150-600 models)!

Keep us posted as you learn more...

This Sigma can not replace my Tamron 150-600 lens.  They are very different lenses, although both are very good wildlife/bird lenses.  Both can be used handheld throughout their ranges, but any 150-600 is a lot to hold and carry.  I have read that the IS on the Sigma is not as effective as either the  Tamron or Canon, but I have not yet seen any significant difference ... but I haven't tried any slow shutter speeds yet.  At over 1/100 speeds, it appears to be solid.

For me, this is a compromise lens.  It does not have the reach of the Tamron, but it is enough to use for wildlife and holds up well to cropping.  I have noticed some very minor CA on some shots, but that's not unexpected.  I'll go out with it again today and see what else I can find.

Tried some bird shots today

Very sharp.  Used both AV at f/8 and TV at 1/1000 this time.  These are cropped photos.
