Just purchased my very first DSLR!!!! Yeah!!!!
1

In 1985 my sister and I went in together and bought my father an Olympus for his birthday to replace his aging Kodak Retina. He loved it but politely asked if we would mind if he exchanged it for a camera that had just came out. We weren't offended... and I still have that crossed X Maxxum 7000 with the original 50mm and Beercan. That is the camera that I learned photography on and that started my life long love of Minolta cameras. I have taken more photos with that 7000 than any other camera I have ever owned even with the itchy trigger finger afforded by digital!

I now have many Maxxum bodies, an arsenal of A mount lenses and a couple SLT's... all of which I love. I finally just acquired a camera that I have always wanted... a Maxxum 7D. What an absolute beauty!!!! It is practically a twin of my Maxxum 7 body... my favorite film body ever!

The seller guaranteed that the 7D does not yet suffer the first frame black problem... I am anxiously waiting for the battery to charge to take my first picture with the 7D! My fingers are crossed just like the X's on my 7000!

I love Minolta Maxxum cameras and with the current give away prices I have collected pretty much every Maxxum 7 series and above body with the exception of an 8000i, 9xi and until now the Maxxum 7D. Those darned MF Minoltas have been creeping there way into my collection too. My favorite being the SRT-102 for a personal defence weapon and the X-700 for taking pictures. An XD11 is on the short list for acquisition when one comes along in good condition at the right price.

Mike, you're quite a Minolta aficionado. I still have my film Maxxum 7 where its rubber coating turned sticky - seems to be common w/ cameras from 1980s. And you're right, the digital 7D is very much reminiscent of the film 7 w/ external controls rather than menu driven. The ergonomics of the 7D even today is like none other - its such a joy to shoot with. Enjoy and please post images from your photo outings.

Re: Just purchased my very first DSLR!!!! Yeah!!!!

The shutter is dead on the 7D.  ;-(   The seller gave me a full refund and let me keep the 7D with 3 batteries and a charger.  I love Minolta's and love the controls on 7D... I don't know if I will buy another 7D again... it would have to be a really good deal.  Too bad my A77 doesn't have the same control set as the 7D!  ... I still love my A77 anyway and it is my main camera.

I have a 7000i with the icky sticky grip and I also have a sticky xtsi (I think) that came with a lens I wanted.   My original 1985 7000 grip is fine though.  I wonder what makes some grips go sticky while others are fine?  I know it isn't a only a Minolta phenomenon.

Sorry to hear that the 7D was dead but at the seller honored the sale. Now you have a nice display piece. Feel the same was about the controls. This is the reason that I'll never sell my 7D. Good luck.
