Fuji x100 f for landscapes ?

Hi,

Im in the process of buying a new camera , the X100F is high on my list.

90% of my pictures i do take when im going on holiday so need a small camera easy to travel with .

I did read a lot of reviews , and its a fantastic camera but some of the reviews do find the X100F not so good for landscape pictures due of the dull colors that the camera produce .

What are your opinions about this camera , is it good for landscape pictures ?

Thx Willem

If you shoot RAW, the colours are whatever you make them at your leisure. You can also process RAW exposures in the camera with highlight and shadow controls as well as saturation. To top it off, there are a bunch of film simulations to produce out of camera JPEGs including at least one that is highly saturated.

I suspect it is not a matter of dull colours, but rather dull reviewers who did not take the time to learn how to get the most out of the camera.

On the other hand, the 23mm lens somewhat restricts the angle of view for capturing the vastness of a landscape. A decade or so ago, this would have been a major limitation. Stitching software was in its infancy and almost any successfully stitched image drew high praise when uploaded, no matter how boring it was. Technical problems were monumental. Now it is all but automatic. No more need for expensive high precision tripod heads, even auto-exposures work just fine. I use Adobe Camera RAW and it rarely fails.

Thx for your reply ,

Im new to Fuji so not familiar to the menu and settings of the camera .

I shoot in JPEG , can I control color , highlight and shadow etc in JEPEG on the the 100F .

I now have the GX80 from Panasonic and can control in JPEG the color , highlight and shadow etc .?

You are right about stitching , that would be a good solution , thx

Great answer on all counts. I can recommend the free Microsoft ICE as a stitching program (And I am someone who has used Photoshop since ver. 2).

It needs to be said too, that if the OP is a jpg shooter, he could not pick a better system than Fujifilm X.

I stand guilty as charged. I momentarily forgot about it being a Win only product.

I'm sure there are others out there perhaps you can run it with bootcamp?

For landscapes Velvia is a must and it won't be dull for a minute

Shoot with RAW and you can manipulate colors to your heart 's content

Not sure where the dull comment came from?

Fuji colors are never dull

I don't see any reason why you can't use an X100 series for landscape, as long as the field of view is what you want.  Here's a recent X100F Astia JPG from Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, Montana. I tweaked it a bit in Aperture, but not much.

For me, the X100 series cameras are awesome street photography cameras.  Since it doesn't have a zoom, taking just an X100F on a trip would challenge your creativity in a good way.

I am puzzled by any reviews that argue that the X100F has dull colors and so isn't good for landscapes.

If you want to use the X100F for landscapes shots wider than the 23mm focal length, you could do a combination of the following:

  1. Play with built-in panoramic stitching
  2. Buy the wide angle converter
  3. Play with panoramic stitching in post processing software
  4. Use a tripod with a pano head.  Can also benefit from an L-bracket.  I love shooting multi-row panos with a 23mm lens in the portrait orientation.

Lastly, the X100F is not that small and at $1300 it isn't cheap.  I would also consider a high-end P&S with zoom lens such as a Sony RX100 M5.

Re: Fuji x100 f for landscapes ?

Good to know that there are more stitching options .

I know that it is not the smallest camera ( a few years back i walked around with a DSLR and 3 lenses im glad with the size of the 100F) , but i did have a Sony RX100 , i find this camera to small ,buttons are small , the menu is not the best ... ,

If I was determined not to bring my Fuji-X setup with at least a few lenses, I personally wouldn't hesitate traveling with my X100S and Sony RX100 M4.

I would use the RX100 M4 as a zoom P&S with RAW capabilities.  It'll be in P mode and the only thing I would fuss with is maybe exposure compensation.

The X100S would be for 70% of my shots.

Unless I knew I wanted to take wider than 23mm shots of subjects in motion (e.g., NYC's Time Square), I would leave my WCL converter at home --- it's bulky.

I would bring my MeFoto tripod or a small table top tripod.

I think the Fuji will be fine for landscape. I'm using Fuji x70 for landscape, this one is a bit wider and produces nice colors in jpeg. You can set all colors to your liking.

Re: Fuji x100 f for landscapes ?

Late reply, I know But the X100F is NOT suitable for landscapes. The corners are horribly muddy /unsharp even at f8. So the correct answer is NO.
